Seth MacFarlane said on March 3, 2026, that “Season four is written,” with reporting describing 10 completed scripts. The project’s next step appears to depend heavily on MacFarlane’s schedule. Hulu has not publicly verified a production order, filming date, or premiere date in the official material reviewed.
Short answer: The Orville Season 4 is not formally confirmed as a Hulu renewal or production order, but the project is further along than a rumor. Seth MacFarlane said on March 3, 2026 that “Season four is written,” and reporting describes 10 completed scripts. The major obstacle appears to be MacFarlane’s schedule. There is still no verified filming date, trailer, or Season 4 premiere date.
That makes the most accurate headline less definitive than “confirmed”: MacFarlane has publicly confirmed that Season 4 scripts exist, while Hulu has not publicly confirmed that production is moving forward.
What Seth MacFarlane actually confirmed
MacFarlane remains the central creative figure behind The Orville. He created the series, writes and executive-produces it, and plays Captain Ed Mercer. In the March 3, 2026 update, he said that the fourth season had been written. Multiple reports characterize the material as 10 completed episodes or scripts. The reported comments are the strongest public evidence yet that a fourth season has progressed beyond a general expression of interest.

However, “written” describes the creative-development stage. It does not automatically mean that Hulu has ordered the season, approved a production budget, scheduled filming, or set a release date. MacFarlane also indicated that his own workload and availability are the main factors holding up the next stage.
What is confirmed, and what is not
| Question | Current answer |
|---|---|
| Have Season 4 scripts been written? | Yes, according to Seth MacFarlane. Reports describe 10 completed scripts. |
| Is MacFarlane still attached? | Yes. He remains the creator and a key writer, producer, and performer. |
| Has Hulu officially renewed Season 4? | Not verified in the reviewed official material. |
| Has filming started? | No verified start date has been announced. |
| Will filming begin in 2026? | Unconfirmed. Reports of a possible start should not be treated as a production schedule. |
| Does Season 4 have a release date? | No. No reliable premiere date has been announced. |
The distinction matters because television projects can have scripts in development for a considerable period without receiving a formal order. A season can also be delayed after scripts are completed because of cast availability, budgets, scheduling, production logistics, or a platform’s programming decisions.
Hulu still lists only three seasons
Hulu’s current official series listing describes The Orville as a three-season, 36-episode series. That is the currently available catalog—not confirmation that Season 4 has been rejected—but it is also not an official Season 4 announcement.
The series premiered on Fox in 2017 and ran for two seasons there. It then moved to Hulu for its third season, officially titled The Orville: New Horizons. Season 3 premiered on June 2, 2022. Hulu’s official press materials identify the program as a Hulu Original following that move.

Because the third season arrived in 2022, the wait has now extended well beyond two years. The “two-year wait” wording belongs to an earlier stage of the story and is no longer an accurate description of the present hiatus. The newer development is not a confirmed return date; it is the report that the scripts have been completed.
Why the production rumors need caution
Some reports have suggested that filming might begin in 2026, including speculation about a fall start. But a rumor about a possible filming window is not the same as a call sheet, production announcement, or confirmed start date. Director Jon Cassar recently pushed back on speculation that filming would begin soon, adding reason to treat those reports cautiously. His reported response is covered here.
There is also no public trailer, cast call sheet, production notice, or premiere announcement to indicate that cameras are about to roll. Until Hulu, Disney, MacFarlane, or the production team provides that information, a 2026 or 2027 premiere remains speculation.
The four stages fans should keep separate
- Creative development: This is the stage that has been publicly confirmed. MacFarlane says Season 4 is written, with reporting pointing to 10 scripts.
- Greenlight or production order: This has not been independently verified through the official Hulu or Disney material reviewed for this update.
- Filming: No verified production start date is available, and recent reporting cautions against treating imminent-filming rumors as fact.
- Release: There is no confirmed Season 4 premiere date.
This framework explains why both extreme reactions are misleading. It is inaccurate to call Season 4 nothing more than an unsupported fan rumor when the creator says the scripts are written. It is equally inaccurate to say that Hulu has definitely renewed the show or that a premiere is guaranteed.

What the latest update means for Season 4
The March 2026 news is meaningful because it removes one major uncertainty: MacFarlane says the creative work is complete. It also identifies the central remaining problem. The question is no longer simply whether anyone has ideas for another season; it is whether the people and companies involved can commit to producing it.

That is why the responsible reading is cautious optimism. Season 4 appears to have a written foundation and continued involvement from its creator, but it has not yet crossed the public line into a confirmed Hulu production. A genuine confirmation would normally be supported by an official renewal or production-order announcement, a production schedule, casting or filming information, or a release window.
Bottom line
The Orville Season 4 is “seemingly confirmed” only in the limited sense that Seth MacFarlane says the season has been written. Reports point to 10 scripts, and his continuing involvement is clear. But Hulu’s official listing still contains three seasons and 36 episodes, while no verified filming or premiere date has been announced. Until an official renewal or production update arrives, fans should treat Season 4 as a written, apparently intended continuation—not a guaranteed upcoming release.
