Outlander began in 2014 with Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan at its center, supported by an ensemble spanning the Frasers, the MacKenzies and the Randalls. The series reached its eighth and final season in 2026. Here are the original roles and selected later screen credits for cast members where dated information is available.
How the original cast fits into Outlander
Based on Diana Gabaldon’s novels, Outlander follows Claire Randall, a former Second World War nurse transported from 1945 to 18th-century Scotland, and Jamie Fraser, the Highlander she meets there. The story’s time shifts and family ties gave the show a wide ensemble around its two leads.

The leads: Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan
Caitríona Balfe as Claire
Balfe’s Claire anchors the show’s time-traveling story: a modern woman who must navigate a past that is both unfamiliar and dangerous. A 2025 Cosmopolitan retrospective points to Balfe’s film roles in Ford v Ferrari and The Amateur as examples of work beyond the series. In 2026, EL PAÍS reported that she had several projects in progress but did not name them in the account available here. Those examples should not be read as a complete or up-to-the-minute filmography.

#1 Best Overall
- Based on the best-selling book series, Outlander follows Claire Randall, a WWII nurse who is mysteriously transported from 1945 to 1743 Scotland. Forced by circumstances to marry Jamie Fraser, an outlawed Highlander, she finds herself torn between loyalties to two men in different centuries. An epic journey follows as Jamie and Claire navigate clan rivalries, betrayal, political intrigue, and even the American Revolution while they fight to change the course of history, build a home and protect their loved ones.
Sam Heughan as Jamie
Heughan played Jamie Fraser throughout the series, following the character from young Highlander to older husband and father. In 2024, the Associated Press quoted him reflecting on the role’s span: “I played Jamie when he was 23 and now he’s sort of around 60. So it’s quite a journey.” The age progression refers to Jamie’s story, not Heughan’s age. The 2025 retrospective also names The Spy Who Dumped Me and The Couple Next Door as examples of his work outside Outlander.
The next generation of Frasers and MacKenzies
Sophie Skelton as Brianna Fraser
Skelton joined in season two as Brianna, Claire and Jamie’s daughter. The cited cast and retrospective sources establish her place in the series but do not provide a dependable update on a post-series project, so no newer credit is asserted here.
Rank #2
Richard Rankin as Roger MacKenzie
Rankin played Roger, a historian whose life becomes bound up with Brianna’s and the family’s journeys through time. In a 2025 retrospective, Cosmopolitan reported that he had recently led the television series Rebus.
John Bell as Young Ian Murray
Bell played Young Ian, a member of the Fraser family whose adventures take him far beyond his childhood home. STARZ lists him in the show’s cast; the cited material does not establish a current post-series role.

- The American Revolution has arrived, and the Frasers must navigate the perils of war to protect what they have built. They learn that sometimes to defend what you love, you have to leave it behind. As the conflict draws them into the heart of this fight for independence, Jamie and Claire are faced with impossible decisions that have the potential to tear their family apart.
César Domboy as Fergus and Lauren Lyle as Marsali
Domboy’s Fergus and Lyle’s Marsali become part of the Fraser household and its wider story. The 2025 retrospective describes Domboy’s screen work as largely in French film and television. For Lyle, it names roles in The Outrun and Netflix’s Toxic Town. These are selected examples from that retrospective, not a claim that either actor has no other work.
The Randalls and MacKenzies
Tobias Menzies as Frank and Black Jack Randall
Menzies played two sharply contrasting characters: Claire’s husband Frank in the 20th century and the brutal Black Jack Randall in the 18th. Rotten Tomatoes’ cast listing identifies both parts. The sources cited here do not provide a sufficiently grounded later-career update, so this retrospective sticks to his Outlander roles.
Graham McTavish, Lotte Verbeek and Gary Lewis
McTavish played Dougal MacKenzie, Verbeek played Geillis Duncan and Lewis played Colum MacKenzie. STARZ includes all three in its cast listing. The sources available for this article do not establish reliable current-project snapshots for them; assigning a specific “now” credit would go beyond what they support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Outlander’s final-season context
In a report published on 1 March 2026, EL PAÍS described season eight as the show’s final season. STARZ’s current series page likewise lists eight seasons. This retrospective therefore treats the original ensemble as part of a completed television run, rather than describing season eight as upcoming.
