Lucasfilm says a newly restored version of the 1977 theatrical release of Star Wars will return to theaters for a limited run beginning February 19, 2027. The rerelease is part of the film’s 50th anniversary celebration; local showtimes and ticket-sale dates have not yet been announced.
When does the original Star Wars return to theaters?
The limited theatrical run begins February 19, 2027. Lucasfilm announced the rerelease as part of its yearlong celebration of the film’s 50th anniversary. The announcement describes the release as playing “in theaters everywhere,” but does not provide a venue list or local schedules. Lucasfilm’s announcement directs audiences to StarWars.com for ticket and location details.
Which version will theaters show?
Lucasfilm describes it as “a newly restored version of the classic Star Wars (1977) theatrical release.” The film was later renamed Star Wars: A New Hope. The announcement does not specify restoration methods or identify particular changes, so it does not establish details beyond the theatrical release version being restored. Lucasfilm’s official film page lists Star Wars: A New Hope as a 1977 film directed by George Lucas.
Where can you buy tickets?
Ticket-sale timing and participating theaters have not been announced in the release notice. Lucasfilm says to watch StarWars.com for information about when and where tickets will be available. Once listings appear, check the theater’s own schedule for the exact date, showtime, format, and ticket availability; the broad “in theaters everywhere” wording is not a specific list of participating locations.

Will it screen in IMAX or IMAX 70mm?
Space.com reported on September 14, 2026, that the rerelease is planned for IMAX, with digital or film presentation depending on the theater setup and a limited number of IMAX 70mm locations. That format information is secondary reporting, not a venue-by-venue guarantee. Confirm the format on current official listings for the theater you plan to visit; IMAX 70mm should not be assumed to be available in every market. Read Space.com’s IMAX report.

The February 2027 event marks 50 years since the 1977 release of Star Wars, now commonly identified by its later title, A New Hope. Lucasfilm has also listed Star Wars: Starfighter for May 28, 2027; that is a separate film and release, not the anniversary rerelease. Lucasfilm’s Starfighter page gives that film’s date.
