The Onion was named the winning bidder in a November 2024 auction for assets of Infowars’ parent company, but a bankruptcy judge rejected the proposed sale the following month. CEO Ben Collins later described the process as having “clear next steps”; that characterization did not mean the assets had transferred. A separate proposal to license Infowars intellectual property was paused by a Texas court in April 2026.
Did The Onion buy Infowars?
No completed purchase is established by the reported proceedings. The Onion’s parent company, Global Tetrahedron, won a November 2024 bankruptcy auction for assets of Free Speech Systems, Infowars’ parent. In December, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez rejected the proposed sale after criticizing aspects of the auction process and the handling of bids, according to reporting by PBS NewsHour and Engadget.
Winning an auction is not the same as completing a sale. The proposed bankruptcy transaction was rejected, so the auction result did not establish that The Onion took ownership of the assets.
What did Ben Collins mean by “clear next steps”?
Engadget’s headline attributed the phrase “clear next steps to complete the sale” to Onion CEO Ben Collins. It was his description of the process at that point, not a court ruling or confirmation that the purchase had closed. The subsequent rejection of the proposed sale is why the phrase should not be read as proof of an acquisition.

How was the later licensing proposal different?
In April 2026, The Onion pursued a separate arrangement with a state-appointed receiver: a proposed temporary license to Infowars intellectual property while the receiver worked toward liquidation. That was not the 2024 auction purchase and did not itself transfer ownership of Infowars or Free Speech Systems’ assets.
The Associated Press reported in April 2026 that a Texas court paused the proposed licensing arrangement amid new court proceedings. The later final disposition of that pause is not established here, so the proposal should not be described as approved, completed, or permanently rejected.

Did the 2026 Texas judgment ruling decide who controls Infowars?
No. In a separate matter, the Associated Press reported on August 21, 2026, that a Texas appeals court reduced a judgment against Alex Jones to about $6 million. AP said that ruling did not affect the separate Connecticut judgment. It was a development in the financial and legal backdrop, not a ruling on The Onion’s auction bid or its proposed license.

The reported record establishes a rejected proposed sale and a later licensing proposal that was paused in April 2026. It does not establish that The Onion completed an acquisition or obtained control through the license. The reporting cited here does not establish a final ruling after the pause.
