Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges), a former CIA agent, has spent years outside the life he left behind. When his hidden past catches up with him, he goes on the run. Harold Harper (John Lithgow), a former FBI assistant director, is assigned to find him; the two men’s history makes the pursuit personal as well as professional. The first season is a seven-episode cat-and-mouse story combining foreign espionage with personal demons, according to Disney’s September 2024 season announcement. Season two changes the dynamic: Chase and Harper set aside their differences to find Emily after she is kidnapped.
Why the lead pairing is the draw
The show’s appeal is not only whether Chase can evade capture. It is the tension between him and Harper: two men with deep knowledge of one another, forced into conflict and, later, cooperation. The official premise also brings family, identity and the cost of Chase’s past into the espionage plot, so the series is more serialized character drama than a sequence of self-contained investigations.

That pairing takes time to develop on screen. Disney noted in 2024 that Bridges and Lithgow spent much of season one in distant locations and had relatively few scenes together. Season two gives them more time in the same story. Co-creator Jonathan E. Steinberg described the anticipated pairing as a promise that drives the first season, adding, “And it turns out it’s pretty great.” Lithgow called the limited time acting opposite Bridges in season one “a terrific frustration”; Bridges said of working together in season two, “We had a ball.” Those remarks appear in Disney’s September 12, 2024 article.
Who else is in the cast?
Alongside Bridges and Lithgow, the official FX cast listing names Amy Brenneman as Zoe McDonald, Alia Shawkat as Emily Chase/Angela Adams, Navid Negahban as Faraz Hamzad, Gbenga Akinnagbe as Julian Carson and Jacqueline Antaramian as Khadija. Their characters connect Chase’s present-day flight to the relationships and history he cannot leave behind.

How many seasons and episodes are there?
Disney’s September 2024 article lists seven episodes in season one. Disney Latin America’s 2024 press kit describes season two as eight episodes. The regional press kit is the cited source for season two’s count; episode totals here are season facts, not a measure of quality.
The series is based on Thomas Perry’s novel The Old Man. Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine created and wrote the television adaptation; official materials credit 20th Television and The Littlefield Company as production entities. Readers curious about the source story can look for Perry’s novel as a companion to the adaptation; the book and the television series are separate works.
