Dakota Johnson played a new Dunder Mifflin employee in the 2013 finale of The Office. She later said she expected to spend only about half a day on set, but filmed for two weeks and was barely visible in the finished episode. Her appearance was also reportedly intended to introduce new employees for a possible follow-on series—but that plan was never proof of an ordered spinoff.
Who Dakota Johnson played in the finale
Johnson appeared as an employee at Dunder Mifflin, taking the place of Kevin Malone after Kevin was no longer part of the company. Her role was small: she described much of her work as standing in the background and faxing. Entertainment Tonight reported her account in 2024, following her appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers.
The sources do not establish who selected Johnson or why she was chosen. They also do not support treating her as a central character in the finale.
Why Johnson said the shoot was unexpectedly long
Johnson said she was a longtime fan of The Office and thought she would be on set for about half a day. Instead, she recalled, “I was there for two weeks and I’m barely in the f**king show.” She said much of her time involved background scenes faxing. The two-week duration is Johnson’s personal recollection, as reported by Entertainment Tonight, not an independently documented production schedule.

She also described the cast as sad and the set as socially awkward, saying there were “weird dynamics” after the preceding decade and that some people did not speak to each other. That is Johnson’s retrospective description, not a verified account of every cast member’s behavior. Her “worst time of my life” remark was delivered as a quip before she explained the circumstances.
Was the cameo meant to set up a spinoff?
Apparently, it was intended as a possible starting point for a new story. TIME’s 2024 overview summarizes a 2021 Hollywood Reporter report that Johnson’s appearance was supposed to introduce a fresh group of Dunder Mifflin employees for a potential follow-on series.

That account describes a reported development plan, not a spinoff that was ordered or produced. It also does not establish that Johnson was guaranteed a continuing role or would have led the proposed series. Her recollection of spending much of the shoot faxing helps explain why an intended introduction could still feel fleeting in the episode.

The finale takes place after the in-universe documentary has aired, then jumps ahead to show how the characters live with the attention and consequences. It is an ensemble ending rather than a story built around one new employee.
