In the U.S. version of The Office, Michael Scott starts as Scranton’s Regional Manager, Dwight Schrute and Jim Halpert work in sales, and Pam Beesly is the receptionist. Their titles change through temporary assignments, branch moves, promotions and a separate paper company. This guide follows the core Scranton characters—Michael, Dwight, Jim, Pam, Ryan and Andy—and distinguishes formal jobs from comic or short-lived roles.

How to read the titles

The show’s ensemble shifts over nine seasons, so “main character” can mean different things at different points. The six people below form a practical guide to the central Scranton office stories, with Andy included because his management arc becomes significant. Job titles here are tied to the employer and period in which they occur: a temporary assignment or joke title is not the same as a permanent promotion.

In the Pilot, Michael introduces himself on a sales call: “This is Michael Scott. I am the Regional Manager of Dunder Mifflin Paper Products.” Peacock’s official character and show pages feature the series and its ensemble.

Michael Scott

Dunder Mifflin: Regional Manager

Michael is Scranton’s Regional Manager when the series begins. He oversees the branch, though the comedy often turns his management style into the story rather than depicting a conventional corporate leader.

A planned succession that does not last

In the season 3 finale, Michael expects to take a corporate job and names Dwight as his successor. Dwight briefly takes charge, with Andy as his number two and Pam offered a deliberately secret assistant title. Michael returns to manage Scranton, so the arrangement is temporary rather than a lasting handover. The season 3 finale transcript captures the proposed succession.

Michael Scott Paper Company

Michael later leaves Dunder Mifflin with Pam and Ryan to start the Michael Scott Paper Company. This is a distinct employer chapter, not another Dunder Mifflin title. The group eventually returns to Dunder Mifflin. The season 5 story follows the company’s launch and resolution.

Dwight Schrute

Dunder Mifflin: Salesman and “Assistant to the Regional Manager”

Dwight works in sales and repeatedly claims the title “Assistant to the Regional Manager.” The wording is part of a running office rivalry, not a standard management rank equivalent to Regional Manager. In season 5, Dwight says he lost the title and Michael gave it to Jim, showing how the distinction can shift informally. The season 5 transcript preserves that exchange.

Briefly named successor

When Michael expects to leave at the end of season 3, Dwight is named as the next manager and briefly runs the Scranton branch. That short-lived arrangement ends when Michael returns.

Dunder Mifflin: Regional Manager

In season 9, David Wallace offers Dwight the manager position, and Dwight becomes Scranton’s Regional Manager. This is his clear, formal step into branch leadership. The season 9 finale transcript shows the offer and the ending roles.

Jim Halpert

Dunder Mifflin: Sales representative

Jim’s main role is sales representative. The Pilot shows him working with sales figures and customer-facing accounts. A season 4 character listing also describes him as an assistant manager alongside his sales work. The Pilot transcript and the season 4 character listing establish those roles.

Assistant manager and branch-specific title distinctions

Jim takes on assistant-manager or number-two responsibilities, but “Assistant to the Regional Manager” needs context. At Stamford, the assistant regional manager title existed as a real title; Dwight’s repeated use of the similar phrase in Scranton is played as a comic distinction. In season 5, Michael says he gave Dwight’s title to Jim, but that exchange does not turn the phrase into a uniform promotion across branches. The Stamford merger-period transcript and the season 5 exchange show the difference.

Athlead/Athleap: work outside the branch hierarchy

Jim later pursues the sports-marketing venture Athlead, renamed Athleap. That work sits outside Dunder Mifflin’s office hierarchy. By the series finale, Jim no longer works at Dunder Mifflin. The finale places his later path alongside the other characters’ endings.

Pam Beesly Halpert

Dunder Mifflin: Receptionist

Pam begins as Scranton’s receptionist. The Pilot identifies her in that role.

Michael Scott Paper Company

Pam leaves Dunder Mifflin with Michael and Ryan to join the Michael Scott Paper Company, then returns with them when the company chapter ends.

A temporary assistant assignment, then office administrator

During Dwight’s briefly planned succession, Pam is offered a deliberately secret assistant-to-the-manager role. It is a temporary comic assignment, not her lasting job title. By the series finale, her title is office administrator. The season 3 finale depicts the temporary arrangement; the series finale identifies her later role.

Ryan Howard

Dunder Mifflin: Temp, then sales representative

Ryan starts at Scranton as a temporary employee and later becomes a sales representative. These are distinct stages, not one continuous title.

Corporate roles: Vice President, Northeast Region, and Director of New Media

Ryan rises to Vice President, Northeast Region, and Director of New Media. The season 3 and season 4 character summaries describe these corporate roles. The season 3 character summary and the season 4 character listing document his ascent.

A fall in status and a separate-company chapter

Ryan’s corporate rise is followed by a fall and a return to Scranton in a lower-level role; he also joins Michael and Pam at the Michael Scott Paper Company. The available episode summaries do not establish every intermediate title or demotion as a complete HR record, so those transitions should not be treated as an exhaustive list of formal titles.

Andy Bernard

Stamford: Sales and an extravagant title

Andy arrives from Stamford associated with sales. During the merger period, he is called “Regional Director in Charge of Sales,” an unusually grand title for the office comedy. The season 3 transcript uses the title.

Scranton: Sales and temporary number two

After transferring to Scranton, Andy remains in sales. When Dwight briefly runs the branch during Michael’s planned departure, Andy serves as Dwight’s number two. That is a temporary place in the proposed chain of command, not a lasting management appointment.

Leaving the office world

In season 9, Andy leaves to pursue acting, returns to sales, and later leaves the office world again. Dwight, rather than Andy, becomes Scranton Regional Manager. The season 9 finale transcript depicts Dwight’s appointment and the characters’ closing paths.
