These are the 10 rows published on Unicode’s Emoji Recently Added, v17.0 chart. The chart combines new characters, sequences and variants, so its 10-entry count is not the same as the number of new code points.

A code point is an encoded character in Unicode. It is different from an emoji sequence, which combines existing characters to produce one displayed emoji.
Sequences and variants explained
Ballet dancer
🧑🩰 combines a gender-neutral person, a zero-width joiner and ballet shoes. It is therefore a sequence rather than a single new character. Implementations can apply skin-tone modifiers to the person component.
People with bunny ears and people wrestling
The base emojis 👯 and 🤼 already existed. Emoji 17.0 adds standardized combinations involving gender, skin tone and, for wrestling, group configurations. Unicode lists these combinations with the new additions even though the base pictographs are not new.

Sequences may contain several underlying characters. A system that lacks the complete sequence data can show separate symbols instead of one combined emoji.

The apple-core emoji appeared in earlier draft and preview material but was withdrawn before the final Emoji 17.0 repertoire. It is not part of the finalized list.
Unicode’s September 10, 2025 release announcement still uses wording about “eight new emoji characters,” while the finalized chart and Emojipedia’s later analysis reflect the apple-core withdrawal and identify seven new standalone code points. The discrepancy is a difference between early release wording and the completed repertoire, not an additional hidden emoji.

What “official” means—and what it does not
Unicode approval means that the character or sequence is standardized for interoperable digital text. Unicode defines names, code points, joining behavior, modifiers and related emoji data in Unicode Technical Standard #51.
Unicode does not draw one universal emoji image. Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsung, Meta, WhatsApp and other vendors create their own artwork, fonts and rendering systems. The same orca, trombone or distorted face can therefore differ in expression, color, pose and detail from one platform to another.

When will the new emojis appear on phones and apps?
Approval, font support, operating-system support and app support are separate steps:
- Unicode finalizes the repertoire. Emoji 17.0 is associated with Unicode 17.0, formally announced on September 10, 2025.
- A vendor adds artwork and font data. Google published Emoji 17.0 designs through Noto Color Emoji and Noto Emoji, with progressive rollout across Android and other Google platforms during 2026. See Google’s Emoji 17.0 rollout report.
- The operating system or browser is updated. Your device needs a release containing the relevant font and emoji data.
- The app supports the update. Some apps use the system emoji font; others bundle their own font or render emoji as proprietary artwork.
- The recipient’s system supports it too. A message can contain valid Unicode text even when the receiving device cannot draw it.
Rollout is staggered across Google, WhatsApp, Samsung, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft and other services. There is no single date on which every phone, browser and messaging app displays Emoji 17.0 identically.
Why a new emoji may appear as a box or separate symbols
- The operating system or browser is too old.
- The app uses an older bundled emoji font.
- The recipient has not received a compatible update.
- A sequence is only partly supported, so its components appear separately.
- A skin-tone modifier is unsupported even though the base emoji works.
- The service substitutes stickers or its own artwork instead of native Unicode emoji.
An empty box, question mark or separated symbols usually means the text arrived but the renderer lacks the required glyph or sequence data. Updating only the keyboard may not help; the relevant operating system, app, browser or font must support Emoji 17.0.

Can you copy and paste the new emojis?
Yes, if your browser and device render them correctly. You can copy the symbols in the table, but copying text does not install a supporting font on another device. The ballet dancer and skin-tone variants contain multiple code points, so they may display differently—or split apart—on older systems.

The practical answer
Emoji 17.0 is official, and Unicode’s recently added chart has 10 entries. Seven are new standalone characters; the rest are a ballet-dancer sequence or newly standardized combinations for existing people emojis. The apple core is not in the final release. Whether you can see any of them depends on the font, operating system, browser, app and recipient that handle the message.
