The deleted moment is Belle’s song, “When Love Is Gone,” performed as Scrooge remembers their parting. It was cut from the film’s initial theatrical release, but a restored full-length version was reported on Disney+ in 2022. To find it, check the current listing for The Muppet Christmas Carol and look for the full-length version—Brian Henson has said it may be among the film’s extras.
What was deleted from The Muppet Christmas Carol?
It was not a separate ending or a newly filmed scene. “When Love Is Gone” is Belle’s ballad during Scrooge’s memories of their earlier life together. Meredith Braun plays Belle in the film, which Disney lists as directed by Brian Henson and released on December 11, 1992. Disney’s official listing gives the movie a runtime of 1 hour 26 minutes and a G rating: Disney’s film page.
The sequence was removed for the initial theatrical release. Henson later explained that the filmmakers worried very young children were becoming restless during the ballad. The plan, he said, was to restore it in later versions, but the scene was missing from the master used for subsequent video releases. His account appears in TheWrap’s 2022 interviews and a 2025 TheaterMania interview.
How to watch the version with the song
- Open the current Disney+ listing for The Muppet Christmas Carol in your territory. The service’s catalog and interface can change, so availability may differ by location and date.
- Look for a listing or playback option identified as the “full-length” version rather than assuming the default film listing contains the song.
- If you do not see it, check the film’s extras area. In 2025, Henson told TheaterMania: “You have to watch it on Disney+ and select the full-length version with the cut song [‘When Love Is Gone’].”
The full-length version was reported on Disney+ in December 2022, with the song restored. TheWrap reported that it was available in 4K and that viewers might need to find it in the extras. Those reports establish where it was available at the time, not that Disney+ still presents it in the same place or in every territory. Disney’s own search result has also listed the film on Disney+; check the live listing before watching.

Why the restored moment changes the story
The song gives Scrooge’s memory of Belle room to register as a loss, rather than simply another stop on his journey through the past. Songwriter Paul Williams described its purpose as exposing Scrooge’s inner life; Henson has likewise framed the scene around Scrooge looking back on Belle leaving him at a low point. Those are the creators’ interpretations, but they help explain why the cut can make the memory feel different: the ballad spells out emotional consequences that the surrounding scenes otherwise leave more implicit.
At a 30th-anniversary panel, D23 described “When Love Is Gone” as a “recently restored ballad.” The Museum of the Moving Image later described its screenings as the full, uncut version featuring the song. These institutional references support the distinction between the theatrical cut and the restored full-length presentation, rather than indicating a different film.

The theatrical cut and full-length version
| Version | “When Love Is Gone” | Runtime and access |
|---|---|---|
| Initial theatrical cut | The song was removed. | Disney’s official film page lists the film at 1 hour 26 minutes; it does not identify that runtime as a comparison between cuts. |
| Full-length version | The restored song is integrated into the film. | Reported on Disney+ in 2022; Henson directed viewers to select it and suggested it may be in the extras. The Museum of the Moving Image lists its full-length screening at 85 minutes, a differently presented runtime that does not by itself prove a cut-length difference. |
The safest way to tell which version you have is to check whether Belle’s “When Love Is Gone” plays within the film. Runtime figures are not a reliable standalone comparison here: Disney lists 1 hour 26 minutes, while the museum gives 85 minutes for its screening, and the sources may use different timing or rounding conventions.

Henson said the theatrical cut was made because of concerns about young children’s attention during the ballad, not because the filmmakers intended the song to vanish permanently. The restoration became possible after Disney found an interpositive containing the scene. Henson said the recovered reel allowed the full version to be reassembled, according to TheWrap’s 2022 account.

Henson has since argued for making the restored version the one audiences encounter. In 2025, he told TheaterMania, “I really want to get it so that nobody ever sees the movie again without that song.” That is his preference, not confirmation that the theatrical cut has been withdrawn or that every current Disney+ listing defaults to the full-length version.
