There is no reliably established all-time record-holder for the most valuable 78 rpm record. Secondary marketplace rankings report high sales for rare blues records, but they are not a comprehensive, independently audited auction record. The figures below are useful leads—not appraisals—and the exact issue, condition, and sale terms matter as much as the artist’s name.

Reported high-value 78 rpm sales

ValueYourMusic’s indexed all-time ranking reports these historical listing results. The ranking page was not available for full verification, so treat the figures as platform-reported entries rather than independently confirmed market values.

Record Reported result
Tommy Johnson, “Alcohol and Jake Blues/Ridin’ Horse,” Paramount 1250 $37,100; reported sold September 25, 2013
Robert Johnson, Vocalion 03519 $26,000; reported sold August 7, 2018
Charley Patton, Vocalion 02782 $23,855.55; reported sold May 19, 2020
Charley Patton, Paramount 12792 $19,600; reported sold January 14, 2020
Long “Cleve” Reed and Little Harvey Hull, Black Patti 8002 $16,799.99; reported sold January 26, 2015

These are reported listing prices, not a price guide for other copies. Verify the original sale record, currency, condition, and transaction terms before relying on a figure. A separate RR Auction example illustrates why a famous name or an original sleeve does not automatically mean a record is worth thousands: an Enrico Caruso RCA Victor Red Seal 78 rpm record was described as fine, with a very good original paper sleeve, and sold for $123 including buyer’s premium in a sale ending December 16, 2012. That is a historical result, not a current appraisal.

Why one record cannot be named the definitive most valuable

A marketplace ranking is not a complete record of auction and private sales. Listings can differ in how they describe a sale, whether fees are included, and how well a copy’s condition is documented. The available evidence does not establish a comprehensive highest-ever sale, a consistent grading scale, or a current value for any individual copy.

  • Bulk Pack of 25 – A cost-effective solution for collectors, DJs, and record stores looking to preserve and protect large vinyl collections.

Rarity is only one part of why a record attracts collector interest. Nauck’s Vintage Records describes selected auction highlights as standing out for “rarity, value, historical significance and/or visual appeal.” That is the auctioneer’s description of its highlights, not a universal formula for valuing records. Its Fall 2026 sale was scheduled to close Saturday, October 17, 2026, and its catalog covered 78 rpm records alongside cylinders, radio transcriptions, Edison Diamond Discs, picture records, and test pressings. A specialist catalog demonstrates an active, varied market; it does not mean every cataloged item is valuable.

How to identify and compare a 78 rpm record

Before searching for prices, establish exactly what you have. A comparison based only on an artist’s name can lump together different releases and copies.

  1. Record the label and catalog number. Note the artist, title, label, catalog number, and the two sides paired on the disc.
  2. Identify the issue. Record the country or pressing and any issue details. Distinguish an original from a later issue, test pressing, or unusual variant only when you can substantiate that identification.
  3. Describe the copy’s condition. Note cracks, chips, warping, visible wear, and playability. Describe the sleeve separately; condition of the disc and sleeve can differ.
  4. Document provenance where relevant. A supported historical connection may matter to collectors, but do not claim one without documentation.
  5. Compare completed transactions. Look for the same issue and similar condition. Record the sale date and venue, currency, whether the buyer’s premium is included, and shipping or other terms when available.

Collector interest is not confined to blues. Nauck’s catalog spans jazz, blues, country, classical, rock and roll, R&B, international, children’s, and historical recordings. The relevant comparison is the exact record within its collector community, not a broad assumption that one genre or famous performer guarantees a high price.

Asking prices are not completed sales

A high listing price shows what a seller hopes to receive, not what a buyer paid. Nauck’s current auction catalog notes that some lots receive no bids and that unsold records may later be offered at minimum bid. Use completed, comparable transactions as evidence, and treat even those results as specific to the copy and terms of that sale.

When to seek specialist help

If a record appears unusual or potentially significant, compare it with specialist auction catalogs and ask an evaluator or auctioneer whether the item falls within their expertise. Nauck’s catalog shows the range of material handled by a specialist record auction, while RR Auction’s Caruso lot page documents a completed sale and provides an evaluation route. Confirm each specialist’s scope and terms directly; neither a catalog highlight nor an evaluation offer establishes the value of your particular copy.
