Mongolia’s deel-inspired ceremony ensemble is the most distinctive overall; Team USA’s Ralph Lauren look made the strongest case for relaxed tailoring, while Haiti and France showed how different cultural references can shape a national uniform.
What makes an Olympic uniform stylish?
A uniform can be striking without serving the same purpose as another. Ceremony clothes are made to present a team to the world; competition kits must function as sportswear. This comparison considers each look’s intended use, cultural references, silhouette, colors and design provenance. It does not treat a ceremony outfit as a performance kit or suggest that one country’s clothing is objectively superior. As Vogue explains, Olympic uniforms can be both expressions of national identity and functional athletic apparel.
Which country had the most stylish Olympic uniform?
Mongolia: Michel & Amazonka’s richly detailed ceremony look
Mongolia’s opening and closing ceremony outfits, created by Ulaanbaatar label Michel & Amazonka, are the most visually distinctive of these selections. Their silhouettes draw on the traditional deel, while dark red, navy and gold embroidery decorates collars, cuffs and vests. Pleated skirts, white draped capes, sash belts, embroidered pouch bags, earrings, pointed Buryat hats and gutal boots complete the looks.
The ornament brings together national and Olympic imagery: the Mongolian flag’s Soyombo symbol appears alongside the Eiffel Tower, Olympic rings and Olympic flame. Vogue reported, citing the Mongolian National Olympic Committee, that each uniform took an average of 20 hours to complete. In a separate 2024 interview, Michel & Amazonka CEO Munkhjargal Choigaalaa told TIME that the team had three months to make 120 sets, with 42 people working on sourcing, embroidery and sewing. Those are attributed production figures, not an independently audited count.

The collection also drew on Mongolian landscape and history, including mountains, clouds, birds and the Nine White Banners associated with Naadam. Choigaalaa said, “We are still shocked. We didn’t expect that the world would receive it this way,” speaking to TIME about the response to the designs.
United States: Ralph Lauren’s tailored take on American casual
Team USA’s Ralph Lauren opening ceremony outfit paired formal and casual elements: a single-breasted wool blazer with red-and-white tipping, a striped Oxford shirt, tapered jeans and suede buck shoes. For the closing ceremony, the athletes wore a sporty moto-style jacket with white denim and a Polo shirt. Ralph Lauren said the ceremony-uniform items were manufactured in the United States.
The contrast between blazer and jeans gave the opening look a recognizable American-casual character without abandoning a dressed-up silhouette. David Lauren, Ralph Lauren Corporation’s chief branding and innovation officer, told the Associated Press: “Nothing says America like blue jeans, especially when we’re in Paris.” In the same interview, he said the goal was to make athletes feel dressed up and like a team while remaining comfortable and “distinctively American.”
The athlete uniforms should be distinguished from Ralph Lauren’s broader Team USA fan collection, which included varsity jackets, Polo shirts, vintage-style rugby shirts and an American flag sweater. The company also described waste-minimizing flat-knit technology for the closing Polo shirt and a first-ever 100% recycled-cotton Polo shirt using NFW CLARUS technology for villagewear. Those environmental and materials descriptions are the company’s claims, not independent assessments. Its June 2024 announcement listed RalphLauren.com, TeamUSAShop.com and stores in the United States and France as sales channels at that time; it does not establish what remains available now. Ralph Lauren’s announcement also quoted U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee CEO Sarah Hirshland calling the apparel a symbol of unity and inspiration.

Haiti: Stella Jean and Philippe Dodard’s vivid collaboration
Haiti’s ceremony uniform connected contemporary tailoring with Haitian visual culture. Designer Stella Jean worked with Haitian painter Philippe Dodard, whose patterned fabric appeared on the trousers and skirt. The men’s look combined a light-blue jacket adapted from the Caribbean guayabera with vivid patterned trousers and a scarf; the women’s version paired a matching skirt with a light-blue shirt and structured jacket.
Jean described the work as combining Haitian fabrics and motifs with Western silhouettes “as a tool of counter colonization.” In her words, “creativity has no border, it’s a global passport.” Both quotations and the design details were reported by TIME. The result stands out not for formal grandeur but for making the print and its cultural context central to the look.
France: Berluti ceremony formalwear, separate from the competition kit
France’s opening ceremony outfits by Berluti, designed with Carine Roitfeld, used royal blue formalwear with burnished lapels in an ombré interpretation of the French flag. Athletes could wear long-sleeve or sleeveless jackets, with slim trousers or a skirt. Euronews reported in 2024 that more than 26,000 feet of fabric and 60 miles of stitches went into over 1,500 outfits. LVMH Image & Environment executive Antoine Arnault said the clothing represented Berluti’s savoir-faire and creativity.

That formalwear was for the ceremony, not competition. France’s athletic collection was a separate collaboration between designer Stéphane Ashpool and Le Coq Sportif. Vogue reported that Ashpool worked to have the kit made locally in France. He told Vogue Business that athletes wanted to look French without becoming “a walking flag,” and said feeling good in the kit could boost confidence and, in turn, performance. The distinction matters: Berluti’s polished ceremony look and the sport-specific Le Coq Sportif collection answered different design needs.

Other memorable Olympic uniform designs
Jamaica: Puma’s black, gold and green kit
Jamaica’s Puma kit used the national colors black, gold and green. Puma CEO Arne Freundt said the cut lines were intended to accentuate athletes’ physiques while highlighting the body in motion, as reported by Vogue. Its emphasis on movement makes it a useful contrast to the tailored ceremony outfits above: the design is rooted in athletic form rather than parade-ground presentation.
Czechia: JAN SOCIÉTÉ’s fashion-forward approach
Designer Jan Černý’s label JAN SOCIÉTÉ created Czechia’s looks. TIME included the label among smaller fashion names whose designs stood out alongside global brands. That makes Czechia a reminder that an Olympic uniform’s profile need not depend on a large international sportswear company.

South Korea: ceremony, competition and medal looks are not the same
South Korea’s ceremony wear came from Musinsa Standard, while The North Face and Youngone provided competition-related outfits. Euronews described motifs drawn from the taegeuk and the trigrams on the South Korean flag. Keeping the ceremony and sport-related designs distinct is essential when comparing uniforms: each has a different setting and function.
Sierra Leone: LABRUM’s reworked cowrie-shell imagery
Sierra Leone’s adidas collaboration with LABRUM used cowrie-shell imagery. Euronews reported that LABRUM’s reveal text framed the shells as symbols reworked around strength and resilience. The interpretation belongs to the designers’ presentation of the kit, rather than being a universal meaning assigned to the symbol.
How to compare the looks fairly
There is no reliable apples-to-apples tally here for every country’s budget, uniform count or material footprint. The strongest comparisons are about design choices and intended use: Mongolia’s embroidered, deel-inspired ceremony clothing; the United States’ tailored denim pairing; Haiti’s patterned collaboration; France’s separate formal and athletic designs; and performance-oriented kits such as Jamaica’s. On those terms, Mongolia is the standout for layered detail and cultural references, while each of the others makes a different case for what an Olympic uniform can express.
