Wrestling’s most head-scratching moves are not necessarily the most dangerous or the least athletic. They are the moments when the action asks the audience to accept a choice that seems to work against a wrestler’s own interests. “Illogical” here is a subjective kayfabe judgment, not an objective all-time ranking: the same sequence can look baffling as a fight and work perfectly as spectacle.
What makes a wrestling move seem illogical?
Professional wrestling is staged athletic performance, and its action follows conventions as well as story logic. A move may require cooperation, invite a counter, or exist mainly to create a dramatic payoff. The question is not whether a wrestler could perform it, but whether the choice makes sense within the situation the audience is being asked to believe.
- Tactics: Does the wrestler choose an action that appears to give an opponent an easy opening?
- Setup: Does the move depend on the opponent cooperating in a way the scene does not explain?
- Payoff: Is there a recognizable counter, rebound, or dramatic result that makes the sequence feel purposeful?
- Spectacle: Does the athletic display make the apparent logic problem entertaining?
These are ways to think about the examples, not a measured score or a claim that fans agree on a definitive list. Fan discussions raise the Irish whip and leap-over-a-lowered-opponent choreography as debatable cases, but they represent individual discussion rather than a universal verdict.
Moves and sequences that invite questions
The Irish whip—and the run that follows
An Irish whip sends a wrestler toward the ropes, often setting up a rebound and a collision or counter. The kayfabe puzzle is why the wrestler being sent running does not simply stop, reverse direction, or grab the ropes instead of returning toward the opponent. The move’s defenders can point to momentum and the sequence’s familiar counter opportunities; its critics can reasonably ask why a wrestler would help create a predictable exchange.

That tension is part of the convention. The rebound gives the audience a clear beat to anticipate, while the opponent can use it to launch a move or be surprised by a reversal. The sequence can therefore read as illogical if treated as ordinary combat, yet make sense as established choreography with a payoff.
Leaping over a lowered opponent
When a wrestler bends or drops low and the other wrestler jumps over them, the audience may wonder why the jumper chooses a high leap rather than changing direction or attacking. A leap can be visually impressive and can set up a landing, turn, or counter, but the tactical reason for choosing it is not always apparent.

Like the Irish whip, this is a question about the choice presented in the scene, not a claim that the athletes lack skill. The leap-over exchange is staged athletic choreography; its spectacle may be clearer than its in-story strategy.
Why “dangerous” or “banned” does not mean “illogical”
A move can be controversial because of risk without being illogical in the story. WWE’s May 20, 2017 video introduces ten moves it described as controversial and publicly banned, noting that some moves were considered too dangerous in the ring. That is historical WWE material, not a current rulebook for every promotion, and a safety restriction does not establish that a maneuver makes no sense in kayfabe. WWE’s video on banned moves.

WWE’s own retrospective offers a specific example involving Kevin Nash’s Jackknife powerbomb. It recounts that WCW Commissioner James J. Dillon banned the move after The Giant was injured, and that Nash used it on Ray Traylor during the January 26, 1998 episode of Nitro. In the storyline, the act led to a disqualification, fine, and arrest. This was a WCW story from a particular period—not a real arrest, a universal ban, or proof that the move is inherently illogical. WWE’s retrospective on WCW Nitro moments.
WWE has also framed dangerous matches through factors such as weapons, action outside the ring, multiple participants, and confined space. That is an editorial framing of match danger, not a validated injury-risk scale. WWE’s article on dangerous matches.

Keep the spectacle separate from real-world safety
Calling a sequence illogical is a way to discuss storytelling, not an invitation to try a move. WWE says its broadcasts carry a “Do Not Try This” public-service announcement warning children, teens, and parents against reenacting performers’ athletic moves. Its FAQ also says a performer showing concussion symptoms is not cleared to return until passing an ImPACT test and receiving clinical clearance from a certified physician. Those statements describe WWE’s guidance and policy; they should not be generalized into a rule for every promotion. WWE’s FAQ.
A Government of Manitoba wrestling report excerpt recommends reviewing anticipated moves before a match and demonstrating or practicing them with partners. That is useful safety-planning context, but the excerpt does not establish a rule for WWE or professional wrestling as a whole. Government of Manitoba wrestling safety report. None of these examples should be treated as instructions for reenactment.
