There is no verified, definitive ranking of the most expensive Super Bowl halftime shows. The clearest attributed list comes from Pro Football Network, which estimated that The Weeknd’s 2021 show cost $17 million to produce. Other outlets publish sharply different figures, and none of the cited rankings establishes a shared accounting method. The numbers below are reported estimates—not audited budgets or performer paychecks.
Pro Football Network’s reported estimates, ranked
Pro Football Network’s 2024 list names these five shows as its most expensive, using figures it reports as production costs. The years below are the calendar years of the games.
| Rank | Halftime show | Game year | Reported estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Weeknd | 2021 | $17 million |
| 2 | Jennifer Lopez and Shakira | 2020 | $13 million |
| 3 | Prince | 2007 | $12 million |
| 4 | Aerosmith and NSYNC | 2001 | $11 million |
| 5 | Lady Gaga | 2017 | $10 million |
These are Pro Football Network’s estimates, not confirmed totals from the NFL. The outlet does not establish that every figure covers the same production categories, so the ranking is best read as one publication’s comparison rather than a settled league-wide record. Pro Football Network’s list.
Why other published rankings disagree
Apostle Sports Media’s March 2025 ranking gives a different picture. It reports approximately $20 million for what it calls Kendrick Lamar’s “Super Bowl 58, 2024,” approximately $20 million for the 2022 West Coast Legends performance, approximately $13 million for Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, $10 million for Lady Gaga, and around $600,000 for Beyoncé. These are that outlet’s claims, not corroborated official budgets. Apostle Sports Media’s ranking.

The Kendrick Lamar entry has a material date and game-number error: the NFL identifies Lamar with the 2025 Super Bowl LIX halftime show, not Super Bowl 58 in 2024. That discrepancy, together with the radically different estimates, makes the newer ranking unsuitable as an authoritative all-time list. The NFL’s announcement of Kendrick Lamar for Super Bowl LIX.
What a halftime-show “cost” means
A production estimate is not the amount paid to the headliner. The Associated Press reports that the NFL handles production costs and performer expenses. TIME likewise reports, citing NFL vice president of communications Brian McCarthy, that the NFL covers production costs; it says performers receive union-scale pay. Neither source makes a production estimate equivalent to an artist’s appearance fee. Associated Press on the halftime show; TIME on halftime-show economics.

Production can involve stages, props, costumes, set design, lighting, and other elements. The published rankings do not show that each estimate includes the same items or applies the same accounting rules. Without comparable scopes or NFL budget disclosures, even accurately transcribed estimates cannot establish which show truly cost the most.
How the halftime show became a major music platform
The shift from marching bands and variety-style entertainment toward major contemporary headliners accelerated with Michael Jackson’s 1993 performance. AP quotes NFL head of music Seth Dudowsky describing it as the moment “that changed the course of pop stars and major musicians taking that stage seriously.”

The modern show is also a production partnership, not simply an artist booking. The NFL’s 2023 announcement for Rihanna named Apple Music, the NFL, and Roc Nation as partners, with Roc Nation and Jesse Collins as executive producers and Hamish Hamilton as director. The NFL’s 2025 Bad Bunny announcement likewise names Apple Music and Roc Nation among the partners and lists production credits. Those announcements establish the partnership structure, but do not disclose individual show costs. NFL announcement for Rihanna’s 2023 show; NFL announcement for Bad Bunny’s 2025 show.

The halftime stage can deliver a substantial audience beyond the game itself. TIME reports that Kendrick Lamar’s U.S. Spotify streams rose 173% after his 2025 performance, while streams of “Not Like Us” increased 430%. Those are TIME-reported streaming changes, not measures of production cost, and they illustrate why the platform may have value to an artist even when the NFL covers production.
