There is no verified all-time list of the most expensive jewelry actually used on film. The best-known ranking instead estimates what fictional jewels might be worth if their imagined gems and materials were real. On that basis, Taylor & Hart puts Titanic’s Heart of the Ocean at the top—but its page gives two conflicting figures, and neither is the price of the screen prop.
What “most expensive” means for movie jewelry
A jewel in a film can have several different prices, and they are not interchangeable:
- Fictional value: an estimate of what a jewel described or depicted in the story might cost if made from precious materials.
- Prop or production cost: what the filmmakers spent to make or acquire an object. The sources here do not establish a comprehensive ranking of these costs.
- Real-world sale price: what a particular piece—such as a replica or a jewel inspired by a film—actually sold for.
Taylor & Hart’s ranking concerns estimated fictional values, not audited prop budgets or a list of auction records. Its figures should be read as attributed estimates, not market appraisals.
The highest-ranked fictional movie jewels
Taylor & Hart’s page, reviewed in 2026, assigns these estimates to jewels and objects seen in films. The page metadata does not state a publication date. Its Heart of the Ocean figures conflict between the item text and the table.
#1 Best Overall
- Exquisitely sculpted by internationally known sculptor John Perry, they are molded in beautiful, semi translucent Pellucida, his proprietary resin compound that resembles porcelain, but unlike porcelain will not break if dropped.
- These are exactly the same size as those in the movie, 3 inches in wingspan and 2 inches from beak to tail
- Direct pricing; these come from the artist's California studio here in the USA, so direct pricing with no middle man and no import tax.
- The CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICATION includes an excerpt from the contract between 20th Century Fox and John that, in consideration for the creation of the Doves and the other 12 Days of Christmas ornaments, allowed him to retain the copyrights and continue to produce replicas.
- They are as light as a feather so can be hung from the smallest of branches. They look delicate, but they are in fact sturdy and will survive dropping on the floor and similar abuse.
| Film and item | Published figure | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Titanic — Heart of the Ocean | £254,000,000 in the explanatory text; £245,000,000 in the table | Taylor & Hart’s conflicting estimates for the fictional jewel, not a sale or the cost of the screen prop. |
| Gentlemen Prefer Blondes — Loralei’s layered necklace | £895,732 | Taylor & Hart’s estimate of a fictional/on-screen jewel, not a documented sale. |
| Pretty Woman — Vivian’s necklace | £178,000 | Taylor & Hart’s estimate, not a documented sale. |
| Marvel films — Infinity Gauntlet | £17,490,000 | Taylor & Hart’s estimate for its imagined gem-and-metal components. It is a gauntlet, not a conventional piece of jewelry. |
The ranking’s largest number belongs to the Heart of the Ocean, but the discrepancy means it is more accurate to report both values than to choose one. The list is useful as a comparison of imagined treasure, not proof that a particular film prop was made from diamonds or cost anything close to its fictional estimate. (Taylor & Hart’s movie-jewelry ranking)
Was the Heart of the Ocean real?
The necklace is fictional. In the story of James Cameron’s 1997 film Titanic, Rose, played by Kate Winslet, wears it. Taylor & Hart describes its imagined centerpiece as a 25.52-carat, heart-shaped blue fancy diamond inspired by the Hope Diamond. That description and the millions-of-pounds estimates belong to the fictional jewel—not to the object Winslet wore while filming.

- Royal - Style Necklace for Women, Inspired by Lost Princess Tales, Ideal Gift for Halloween, Christmas, Birthdays
A 1998 Los Angeles Times report says Winslet’s movie necklace was fake. The paper also described licensed J. Peterman consumer replicas and separately reported on a real sapphire-and-diamond necklace modeled after the film’s design. Those are distinct objects, not different valuations of the original screen-used necklace. (Los Angeles Times, 1998)
What did a Titanic-inspired necklace actually sell for?
The real sapphire-and-diamond design piece
The Los Angeles Times reported that a 170-carat sapphire-and-diamond necklace modeled after the Heart of the Ocean design sold at auction for about $2.2 million in March 1998. Céline Dion wore it at the Oscars. That historical sale was for a real piece associated with the film’s design, not the fake necklace used on screen.

A Fox-authorized J. Peterman recreation
Heritage Auctions records a Fox Studio-authorized J. Peterman recreation sold on June 26, 2017, for $2,880. The auction description identifies it as having faux diamonds, a faux 74-carat blue pendant, and a 20th Century Fox certificate of authenticity. It was a licensed recreation—not the original filming prop and not the 170-carat sapphire-and-diamond necklace. (Heritage Auctions, 2017 sale record)
| Object | Reported amount and date | What the figure tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Heart of the Ocean in Titanic | £254 million in Taylor & Hart’s text; £245 million in its table (page reviewed 2026) | Conflicting estimates for a fictional jewel. |
| 170-carat sapphire-and-diamond necklace modeled after the design | About $2.2 million, March 1998 | Historical reported sale of a real design-inspired necklace; not the screen prop. |
| Fox-authorized J. Peterman recreation | $2,880, June 26, 2017 | Heritage Auctions’ recorded sale of a faux-stone recreation. |
The pound estimates and dollar sale prices describe different things, at different dates and in different currencies. Comparing them as if they were competing prices for one necklace would be misleading.

- Crafted in die cast metal.
Why movie memorabilia auction records are a separate category
A high auction result for an object from a film does not make it a jewelry record if the object is not jewelry. For example, Heritage Auctions reported that the Wizard of Oz ruby slippers sold for $32.5 million including buyer’s premium in 2024. The slippers are footwear, so that result belongs in a broader movie-memorabilia discussion—not in a ranking of jewelry. (Heritage Auctions, 2024)
The distinction matters: a fictional jewel can have an enormous hypothetical value, while a replica or film-inspired piece has a real sale price that depends on the actual object and its provenance. Neither figure, by itself, establishes what a screen-used prop cost to produce.
