The Monster of Florence is a four-episode Italian-language Netflix drama released October 22, 2025. It revisits an unresolved series of murders through investigators’ shifting leads and suspect perspectives; it does not establish who committed the crimes. Netflix says the series is not based on a book. A further three-episode installment was announced in 2026, but no release date was given.
What is The Monster of Florence?
Netflix describes the 2025 title as an Italian-language limited series created by Leonardo Fasoli and Stefano Sollima, with Sollima directing. Its original chapter has four episodes, listed at roughly 50 to 67 minutes each. Netflix released it in the US on October 22, 2025. The series was produced by The Apartment, a Fremantle company, and AlterEgo.
Netflix’s story begins with the 1968 homicide that investigators revisit after two young people are killed in a parked car in 1982. Across the episodes, the narrative moves among suspects and investigative leads, including what Netflix calls the “Sardinian lead.” Those shifting perspectives are a dramatic structure, not proof of guilt.
Is it based on a true story?
Yes. Netflix presents the series as a drama based on an actual criminal investigation and ongoing legal proceedings. Its 2025 announcement describes eight double murders over seventeen years involving a .22 caliber Beretta; a 2026 announcement refers to eight double murders between 1968 and 1985. These are Netflix’s own descriptions of the case, not an independently verified accounting of court or police records.
#1 Best Overall
Netflix’s Tudum guide calls the case unresolved and says the show explores one theory, the “Sardinian trail.” The series should therefore be understood as a dramatization of an unresolved case, not a definitive account identifying the perpetrator. Its suspect viewpoints are not findings of guilt.
Is the series based on a book?
No. Netflix’s guide says The Monster of Florence is not based on a book. Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi wrote a closely titled true-crime book, but it is separate from the Netflix series and should not be described as its source text or tie-in.

How many episodes are there, and is more coming?
The original limited-series chapter consists of four episodes. Netflix announced a further three-episode installment in production on June 26, 2026. The announced installment focuses on Pietro Pacciani and the “Snack Buddies” lead. Netflix did not give a release date in that announcement, so it is distinct from the four episodes already released.
Who made the series, and who is in the cast?
Leonardo Fasoli and Stefano Sollima created the series, and Sollima directed it. Netflix names Marco Bullitta, Valentino Mannias, Francesca Olia, Liliana Bottone, Giacomo Fadda, Antonio Tintis, and Giordano Mannu in the cast.
