In interviews for the 2024 documentary The Menendez Brothers, the brothers said Erik kept it despite Lyle’s instruction to destroy it, and that jail officials’ discovery of the letter prompted them to disclose their responsibility for their parents’ deaths. That is their retrospective account—not a court finding that the letter forced a confession.
What was in Lyle Menendez’s letter to Erik?
KC Baker’s October 2024 report describes a 17-page letter Lyle wrote to Erik in May 1990, roughly two months after the brothers’ March arrests. The report summarizes its emotional significance through the brothers’ documentary interviews, but it does not publish a verified full text of the letter. Its precise wording and complete contents therefore cannot be established from that account. KC Baker’s report
Erik said, “Lyle couldn’t express what he did in that letter in person.” According to the report, Lyle told Erik to destroy the letter after reading it, but Erik kept it. The brothers said jail officials found it during a cell search. Lyle recalled, “They had a confession that we were responsible for our parents’ death.” Erik described the consequence this way: “As a result of them finding this letter in the summer of 1990, we now had to confess to everyone.” These are interview statements reproduced in the report, not quotations from the letter itself.
Did the letter cause the brothers’ first confession?
No. A recorded session involving Erik, Lyle and therapist Jerome Oziel took place on December 11, 1989, before Lyle wrote the letter. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office publishes a transcript of that session. The 1990 letter’s reported importance is different: the brothers said its discovery led them to disclose their responsibility more broadly. How is this letter different from Erik’s letter to Andy Cano?
Coverage of the case also discusses a separate letter written by Erik to his cousin Andy Cano before the murders. It is not the May 1990 letter from Lyle to Erik.

What happened in the case afterward?
The letter’s reported discovery belongs to the case’s earlier history. Later proceedings involved the separate Andy Cano letter and other claims raised by the brothers’ counsel. ABC News reports that the brothers were resentenced to 50 years to life in May 2025, were denied parole at their first hearings in August 2025, and had their habeas petition denied by Judge William Ryan in September 2025.
