In the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church, the liturgical color for Easter is white. Gold or silver may be used on more solemn occasions in dioceses of the United States. White and gold are also common Easter colors in other Christian traditions, but there is no single color code or symbolism shared by every church.
What Easter’s white color means
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops states, “The liturgical color for Easter is white.” In the Roman Rite, white is used during Easter Time and Christmas Time, as well as for certain feasts. The USCCB says gold or silver vestments may be used on more solemn occasions in U.S. dioceses; gold is not a separate, universally required Easter color.
Church explanations commonly connect white and gold with brightness, light, joy, festivity, and glory. A 1908 Catholic Encyclopedia entry also associates white with innocence and purity. These are traditional interpretations, not a single binding explanation that applies to every denomination. The color serves as a visible sign of the season and its character.
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal describes the purpose of vestment colors as giving outward expression to “the specific character of the mysteries of faith to be celebrated” and to the Christian year’s passage. The USCCB Easter liturgical notes give the direct answer for Easter; the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, paragraph 345, explains the broader purpose of the colors.

Easter Sunday and the Easter season
“Easter” can mean the feast of Easter Sunday or the wider liturgical season. The USCCB describes Easter Time as 50 days, from Resurrection Sunday through Pentecost Sunday. Its first eight days form the Octave of Easter. White is therefore not only a color associated with Easter Sunday in the Roman Rite; it belongs to the season that follows it as well.
What the other traditional church colors signify
These colors help mark other seasons and occasions in the church calendar. Their assigned use and symbolic explanation are related but distinct: the calendar says when a color is used, while customary interpretations explain what it may suggest.

| Color | Typical calendar use | Traditional association |
|---|---|---|
| Purple or violet | Advent and Lent in the Roman Rite | Penitence and preparation; some traditions also associate violet with royalty. |
| Red | Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Pentecost Sunday, and specified feasts in the Roman Rite | Christ’s blood or Passion during Holy Week; fire and the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. |
| Green | Ordinary Time in the Roman Rite | Growth. |
| Rose | May be used where customary on Laetare Sunday, the Fourth Sunday of Lent | A distinct, optional Lenten practice; not a standard Easter-season color. |
| Black | Practice varies; the Roman Rite permits it at funerals in U.S. dioceses | Mourning in some traditions. Good Friday use varies, and some churches use no color or strip the church. |
Purple or violet is especially associated with the seasons leading up to Easter, rather than Easter Time itself. Red illustrates how a color’s meaning can change with the occasion: it may recall the Passion during Holy Week and the fire of Pentecost later in the calendar.

The Roman Rite has a defined liturgical schedule, but it should not be treated as a rule for all Christian communities. United Methodist guidance describes a recurring sequence of purple, white, and green across the Christmas and Easter cycles. The Presbyterian Mission Agency lists white and gold for Easter season and calls its calendar typical. The United Church of Christ explains that congregations may choose colors—or use no set colors at all.

- BUNNIES YOUR KIDS WILL NAME - Sleepy bunnies in teal eggs and crisp white bunny silhouettes on lime green bring real bunny decor to playrooms, classrooms and easter party decorations.
Historical accounts also describe variation rather than one universal system. The UCC says seasonal colors became common in the Western church around the fourth century and that Pope Innocent III systematized five colors by the twelfth century. The Presbyterian Mission Agency emphasizes long-running variation and says standard practices did not prevail until 1570. These accounts highlight different milestones; neither date should be presented as the moment when every church adopted one worldwide system.
For a specific service or congregation, the relevant denomination’s calendar and local practice are the best guides. A church may use a familiar color symbolically without following the Roman Rite’s assignments.
