Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed work on the next installment of The Matrix, and Drew Goddard remains attached as writer and director. The newest development is not a release or casting announcement. In a September 2026 interview, Lilly Wachowski said Goddard may not want to move forward without the Wachowskis’ blessing, and she described that situation as unresolved. No cast, plot, release date, or production start has been confirmed.
The key update: a possible request for the Wachowskis’ blessing
On September 7, 2026, TheWrap’s J. Kim Murphy reported comments Lilly Wachowski made in a KCRW interview. Wachowski, a co-creator of The Matrix, said: “There’s maybe a thing that’s happening with Drew Goddard. He doesn’t want to go forward unless he gets our blessing.” She added: “Could be something that’s coming down the road, but still unknown.” (TheWrap, September 7, 2026)
Read those lines at their actual weight. They describe a possible condition that Goddard may place on the project, not a decision that has already been made. They do not show that production has stopped, that the Wachowskis have agreed to take part, or that the film has been canceled. In the same interview, as TheWrap reported it, Lilly Wachowski said she was not involved with Warner Bros.’ plans and said, “I’m kind of done.” Her comments leave open a possible conversation about a blessing or limited input, but they do not establish a formal role for her.
What is confirmed, what is reported, and what is still unknown
Coverage from August through September 2026 agrees on a short list of facts. Everything else remains open.

Goddard’s latest writing update
GamesRadar reported on March 1, 2026 that Goddard, promoting Project Hail Mary, had given a Screen Rant interview about the film. He said: “I’m in my writing cave writing.” He added: “I don’t know how long I’ll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I’ll have news to share.” (GamesRadar+, March 1, 2026)
Those are the most recent direct comments from Goddard in the coverage cited here, and they confirm only that he was writing in early 2026. They do not indicate that a screenplay is finished, and they came before the September comments about his conditions.
Why the cast questions are still open
Readers searching for this project often ask who will star and whether Priyanka Chopra Jonas will return. A March 1, 2026 Times of India report carried the question in its headline, “Priyanka Chopra to return as Sati?”, but the report did not confirm casting. The March coverage described casting as unresolved, and no later report cited here confirms a returning actor. Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Laurence Fishburne have not been confirmed for the fifth film in the coverage cited here either.
How to judge future announcements
Use a simple test when a new headline appears:
- Official studio material: A statement from Warner Bros. Discovery, or a shareholder letter with specific wording, is stronger evidence than a report that paraphrases one.
- First-person quotes: Quotes from Goddard or the Wachowskis, with the full sentence and date, separate confirmed progress from speculation.
- Role labels: A producer credit is not the same as a writing or directing role, and a comment about being asked for a blessing is not the same as taking part in the production.
- Specific details: A cast list, a premise, or a release date should come from the studio or the filmmakers, not from a headline question.
Figures you may see online
Some pages repeat approximate box-office and budget numbers for The Matrix Resurrections. The Times of India page repeating them was not checked against an original studio, distributor, or box-office source, so those numbers are not presented here as verified, and they should not be read as facts about the fifth film.
