Seventeen-year-old Erich Kulas, wrestling as Mass Transit, replaced Axl Rotten in a match with The Gangstas and suffered a severe forehead cut. The available accounts agree on the central facts but differ on what age Kulas said he was; that discrepancy matters because his age, experience and readiness to perform became the heart of the controversy.
What happened at the Revere show?
At the November 23, 1996, ECW house show at Wonderland Greyhound Park, Erich Kulas filled in for scheduled wrestler Axl Rotten. Kulas performed as Mass Transit and joined The Gangstas in a tag match. Wade Keller’s PWTorch report, published online in 2020 from his December 7, 1996 newsletter coverage, says Kulas had turned 17 the month before and had previously wrestled part-time on small local charity shows. PWTorch’s account is the closest contemporaneous reporting identified here.
The match ended in a medical emergency after Kulas sustained a serious cut to his forehead. PWTorch reported that emergency staff tried to stop the bleeding, an ambulance was called, and he was taken to a local hospital. His father, Steve Kulas, told the publication that his son needed about 50 stitches. He recalled: “When he was cut, all I could do was scream, ‘Get him out of there!’”
A later overview describes the wound as having severed two arteries. That detail comes from retrospective secondary reporting, not from the contemporaneous PWTorch account, so it should be understood as a later-reported medical detail rather than a fact established by the reporting closest to the event. The show was not televised as a broadcast; a later overview says RF Video recorded the match on a fan cam and that the footage was later used in legal proceedings. The original footage has not been independently reviewed for this account.

How old was Mass Transit, and what had he told ECW?
Kulas was 17. The disagreement concerns the age he reportedly gave ECW, not his age at the time. PWTorch’s 1996 report attributes to ECW owner and booker Paul Heyman the account that Kulas represented himself as 19. A later overview says Kulas told Heyman he was 21. The available accounts do not resolve which version is correct, so neither reported claim should be presented as settled.
Training was also disputed. PWTorch says Heyman recalled Kulas claiming formal training with Killer Kowalski and experience in brawling matches. Steve Kulas told PWTorch that his son had wrestled 10 or 15 times but had not received formal professional training. A later overview likewise says Kulas was not formally trained. These are attributed accounts; they do not establish exactly what was verified by ECW before the match.

Did New Jack know he was cutting a minor?
The available evidence does not establish what New Jack knew about Kulas’s age at the time of the match. The accounts describe conflicting claims about what Kulas told Heyman, but that does not by itself show what information New Jack received. PWTorch reported Heyman’s account that Kulas agreed shortly before the match to be bladed, while also noting that Kulas had never bled in the ring before. The later overview says the cut was too deep and severed two arteries. Neither source, as represented here, establishes the precise mechanics of the cut or New Jack’s knowledge and intent.
Heyman described the incident to PWTorch as “a scary incident,” adding: “Thankfully it wasn’t a lot worse. It was a very, very scary incident for all of us. The system we have in place works, but it needs to be upgraded.” The quotation is reproduced from Keller’s report and should be read as Heyman’s statement, not as an independently verified transcript.

How did the incident affect ECW and Barely Legal?
The incident intensified scrutiny of ECW’s violent style and prompted public concern, according to PWTorch’s contemporaneous report. Heyman said ECW would take greater care to require performers on its cards to have formal training and be adults.
A later historical overview reports that Request TV initially cancelled ECW’s first pay-per-view, Barely Legal, in December 1996, then restored it for April 13, 1997. This is secondary reporting; no direct Request TV documentation was identified. The overview also reports that New Jack was acquitted in a criminal trial and later found not liable in a civil case. Those outcomes are reported here without adding judicial reasoning, for which primary court records were not reviewed.
