The Mario & Sonic Olympic Games Era: What Ended After Tokyo 2020

The Tokyo 2020 Switch game remains the last Mario & Sonic Olympic entry. A former producer said the series had finished, while SEGA’s 2025 IOC deal concerns Sonic merchandise—not a new game.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games appears to have ended with its Tokyo 2020 edition, but there has been no formal end-of-series announcement identified from Nintendo, SEGA or the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Former producer Lee Cocker said in 2024 that the franchise finished with that game. A separate 2025 agreement between SEGA and the IOC is about Sonic and Olympic-brand merchandise; it does not announce a return for the Mario & Sonic games.

What happened to the Mario & Sonic Olympic games?

The last entry in the series was Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, released for Nintendo Switch. In July 2024, former franchise producer Lee Cocker said the series had finished with that game, according to Nintendo Life’s report of his comments to Eurogamer. That is a former producer’s account, not a formal cancellation or end notice from Nintendo, SEGA or the IOC.

Cocker’s reported explanation was that the IOC wanted to consider other partners and bring the arrangement back internally to seek more money, with NFTs and esports among the areas it wanted to explore. This is his account as relayed in the report, not a confirmed public explanation from the IOC.

How the Olympic crossover began

Nintendo’s March 2007 announcement introduced the first Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for Wii and Nintendo DS. The game was based on venues for Beijing 2008. Nintendo said SEGA would publish it in Europe and North America, while Nintendo would publish it in Japan; it also described a worldwide licensing partnership with International Sports Multimedia, then identified as the IOC’s exclusive interactive entertainment software licensee.

The pairing put two long-time video game rivals into an officially licensed Olympic setting. Nintendo’s announcement quoted Shigeru Miyamoto describing Mario and Sonic as “respectful rivals” and presenting the games as a chance to find out who was faster. The original launch announcement is available from Nintendo UK.

Why was there no Mario & Sonic game for Paris 2024?

There was no new Mario & Sonic console game for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Cocker’s 2024 comments offer a reported explanation: he said the IOC wanted to explore other partnership options and newer areas such as NFTs and esports. The available reporting does not establish that as an official IOC statement, so it should not be treated as the committee’s confirmed rationale.

Le Monde reported that the Beijing 2007 game sold more than 11 million copies and the Tokyo 2020 edition sold one million. Those are figures reported by the newspaper, not official publisher disclosures in the cited material. In the same article, Seattle University communications and media professor Christopher Paul described Olympic games as unusually time-sensitive products, with a narrow sales window around the event. That is general industry analysis, not proof of why this particular series ended. See Le Monde’s report on the absence of a Paris 2024 console game.

What SEGA and the IOC announced in 2025

On October 7, 2025, SEGA and the IOC announced a new multi-year agreement celebrating Sonic and the Olympic brand. They said they were seeking partners for a Five Rings merchandise collection planned for 2026. The announcement names possible merchandise categories including apparel, toys and games, bags, stationery and sports equipment, but does not identify selected retail partners or a specific product range.

The agreement does not mention Mario or announce a new Olympic video game. It is a separate licensing arrangement focused on Sonic and Olympic-brand merchandise. SEGA’s announcement also reported that the Sonic franchise had surpassed 1.77 billion units in sales and free-to-play downloads; that combined figure is not a count of games sold and does not refer to the Mario & Sonic Olympic titles. What the final game offers

Nintendo describes Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 as a Nintendo Switch exclusive. Its product page lists more than 30 events, including skateboarding, karate, surfing and sport climbing, as well as classic 2D events referencing Tokyo 1964. The game supports motion and button controls, single or dual Joy-Con use, single-player and multiplayer, and local and online play. These are features listed by Nintendo; they do not establish whether every online service remains available today. See Play Nintendo’s game information.

A physical Switch edition existed: Nintendo UK said in June 2020 that the game was available digitally and that players could also get a physical copy through its official UK store. That historical listing confirms the format, not present-day stock, price or availability in other regions. Nintendo UK’s June 2020 announcement covers the launch formats.
