Jon Favreau’s April 2025 answer about The Mandalorian Season 4 was not a cancellation announcement. Since then, he has confirmed he wrote a fourth-season plan, while explaining that the story changed when Lucasfilm moved ahead with The Mandalorian and Grogu as a film. As of the latest statements cited here, a Season 4 order or cancellation has not been established.
What was Favreau’s discouraging update?
At Star Wars Celebration Japan on April 18, 2025, Favreau was asked whether there were still plans for Season 4 or whether Din Djarin would now appear only in movies. He emphasized that The Mandalorian and Grogu was his priority and did not give a firm answer about a television continuation. ComicBook described the response as potentially disappointing, but Lucasfilm did not announce that the series was cancelled. ComicBook’s April 18, 2025 report covers the exchange.
Season 4 had been written—but that is not an order
In an interview published by Empire and reported by GamesRadar+ on November 21, 2025, Favreau said, “We were planning on doing a fourth season. I had actually written all of that,” adding that he still had Season 4 “sitting on my desk.” This confirms a creative plan existed; it does not show that filming began, that Lucasfilm formally ordered the season, or that the plan is currently moving into production. GamesRadar+’s report on Favreau’s comments documents the distinction.
Why the movie changed the television plan
Favreau and Dave Filoni had been mapping out Season 4 when the idea for a film emerged. In a May 21, 2026 interview published by Disney, Favreau explained: “We knew we couldn’t just do what we were planning for Season 4, because that would assume everybody was familiar with the first three seasons.” The feature needed to work for viewers who had not followed the series, so it could not simply be the planned season compressed into a movie. Disney’s interview with Favreau and Pedro Pascal gives his explanation.

- The Journeys of the Mandalorian through the Star Wars galaxy continue. Once a lone bounty hunter, Din Djarin has reunited with Grogu. Meanwhile, the New Republic struggles to lead the galaxy away from its dark history. The Mandalorian will cross paths with old allies and make new enemies as he and Grogu continue their journey together.
How the planned season differed from the film
The available descriptions suggest different storytelling jobs, rather than a direct one-for-one replacement. GamesRadar+ reported on May 13, 2026, that the television plan would have connected more closely to earlier events, helped set up Ahsoka Season 2, and put greater focus on Grand Admiral Thrawn. Favreau characterized the film as a more self-contained adventure. GamesRadar+’s interview report describes those contrasts.
| Aspect | Planned Season 4 | The Mandalorian and Grogu |
|---|---|---|
| Format and audience | A serialized continuation built around earlier series events. | A feature designed to welcome viewers unfamiliar with the first three seasons, according to Favreau’s Disney interview. |
| Story connections | Reportedly linked more closely to Ahsoka Season 2, with more emphasis on Thrawn. | Described by Favreau as a more self-contained story. |
| Production status established by the cited statements | Favreau said he had written the plan; those statements do not establish a formal season order. | The film received an official home-release announcement from Lucasfilm. |
Is The Mandalorian Season 4 cancelled or confirmed?
Neither status is confirmed by the statements above. Favreau’s written plan shows that Season 4 was developed creatively, but a plan is not proof of a production order. The film’s existence and release likewise do not, by themselves, prove the series is over. The careful answer is that a future Season 4 remains unconfirmed in the cited sources—not that it has been cancelled, renewed, or replaced permanently by movies.

What is confirmed about The Mandalorian and Grogu?
Lucasfilm’s September 2, 2026 home-release information says the film is available on digital platforms, Disney+, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD. That confirms the feature’s release and home formats, not a fourth season. Anyone searching for a physical edition should look for The Mandalorian and Grogu Blu-ray or 4K UHD; these are editions of the movie, not Season 4. Lucasfilm’s home-release announcement lists the formats.
