It is better understood as one part of a layered history: the epic preserves a bardic account of the past, frames its transmission through different narrators, and carries Brahmanical religious and didactic authority. How those elements came together remains a scholarly debate, not a story with one established turning point.
What the frame story tells us—and what it cannot prove
In the Mahabharata’s opening frame, Ugraśravas approaches Brahmin sages and recounts a story he says he heard Vaiśampāyana tell at King Janamejaya’s snake sacrifice. The arrangement puts a sūta, a figure associated with bardic narration, in the role of reciter before an audience of Brahmins.

The frame also gives different explanations of how Ugraśravas and his father learned the epic. That complexity matters: the scene is not a straightforward transcript of an identifiable historical handoff. As scholarship discussed by Anu Press argues, the frame helps establish the epic’s audience, authority and literary ambitions as well as representing acts of narration. It is evidence for how the work imagines its transmission, not a reliable record by itself of who composed or edited it.
From bardic tradition to Brahmanical authority: the main interpretation
An influential account holds that heroic or bardic material circulated orally and was later reshaped or canonized by Brahmins, with religious and didactic material becoming part of the epic’s authority. Kanad Sinha places the Mahabharata in a bardic historical tradition associated with the Later Vedic Kurus. In this view, the epic carries a memory of the past, but that is not the same as establishing that it reports events as a modern chronicle would.

This account helps explain why the epic can be associated both with bardic narration and with Brahmanical religious and political authority. It should not, however, be simplified into a story in which one group seized a finished text from another. The surviving work gives evidence of layered traditions and changing authority, not a documented transfer of a fixed poem at a known date.
Why scholars disagree about how the epic took shape
The oral-growth model is not the only scholarly explanation. Some accounts emphasize long-term oral performance and gradual accumulation; others allow for a more concentrated period of written composition. The evidence summarized by Anu Press indicates that the relative roles of oral performance, writing and redaction remain disputed.

Alf Hiltebeitel challenged theories that the epic grew over many centuries, proposing instead a composition period of at most a couple of generations and a Brahmin authorial team. Anu Press scholarship recognizes the value of his close reading of the epic’s self-presentation while cautioning that the frame does not say that Śaunaka and the Naimiṣa Brahmins authored or edited the work. His proposal is an interpretation, not a conclusion established by the frame itself.
| Question | Interpretive possibilities | What can be said securely |
|---|---|---|
| How did the epic grow? | Long oral performance and gradual accumulation, or comparatively concentrated written composition. | The balance between oral composition, writing and redaction is debated. |
| When did Brahmin involvement begin? | Bardic material later reshaped by Brahmins, or Brahmin composition from an early stage. | The text has Brahmanical authority and dimensions, but its frame does not establish a single moment or authorial group. |
| How should the frame be read? | As testimony about transmission, or as literary construction that also establishes audience and authority. | Its narrators are part of the epic’s self-presentation; the frame alone cannot document the historical process. |
| What does the Critical Edition represent? | A useful constituted text, or the broader, varied manuscript tradition. | It is a scholarly reconstruction based on manuscripts, not an original that stands for every version. |
What the BORI Critical Edition is—and is not
The Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute’s Critical Edition is a major manuscript-based scholarly reconstruction. BORI says the project ran from April 1919 to September 1966 and consulted 1,259 manuscripts; it reports about five decades of work. The completed edition, released on September 22, 1966, comprises 19 volumes and more than 89,000 verses in its constituted text. These figures describe the editorial project and its edition, not the size or date of an original Mahabharata.

Adluri and Bagchee describe such a text as a historically situated “normative redaction,” not the archetype of the entire Mahabharata tradition. Passages left out of the constituted text may still preserve evidence of parallel transmission. The Critical Edition is therefore valuable for close study, but it cannot stand in for every regional, manuscript or performance tradition.

The epic can be studied as a historical tradition and as evidence for how the past was remembered and represented. Sinha’s approach situates it in relation to the Later Vedic Kurus while distinguishing historical context from a claim that the epic is authentic history. Its layered narrators and manuscript history also make it a literary and textual object, not simply a chronicle whose account can be read as direct documentation.

For readers consulting an edition, the choice depends on the question. BORI’s Critical Edition is a substantial scholarly route into a manuscript-based constituted text; a translation or other edition may serve different reading purposes. No single edition represents the whole range of the epic’s transmission.
