The Lowdown is a Tulsa-set noir mystery created by Sterlin Harjo, starring Ethan Hawke as Lee Raybon, a self-described “truthstorian” and citizen journalist. Its first-season story follows Lee as he investigates the powerful Washberg family after Dale Washberg dies in circumstances Lee considers suspicious.
What is The Lowdown about?
Lee Raybon publishes an exposé about the Washberg family. When Dale Washberg dies, Lee doubts the circumstances and follows clues Dale left behind, drawing the journalist into a mystery involving people who would rather he stop asking questions. Lee’s rare-books shop in Tulsa is both his workplace and a refuge for people in the community.
FX describes the series with the tagline, “He finds truth. Trouble finds him.” The show mixes crime mystery, comedy and drama rather than playing as a straight procedural.
Who created and stars in the series?

Is Lee Raybon based on a real person?
Harjo has said Lee was inspired in part by Lee Roy Chapman, a Tulsa writer and historian Harjo encountered through This Land Press. Chapman investigated Tulsa history, including W. Tate Brady’s ties to the Ku Klux Klan and his role in the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. In a September 24, 2025, interview with TheWrap, Harjo described the connection as an homage and a starting point—not an effort to have Hawke impersonate Chapman. Lee Raybon and the series’ plot are fictional.
Hawke also told TheWrap, “Tulsa is ripe for stories. There’s so much of America in that city, so much of us is in that city, and it hasn’t been told.” Harjo said of Raybon’s curiosity and attachment to Tulsa, “I like that curiosity and the love for the city, it was infectious.”

What kind of noir is it?
The Guardian characterizes the series as playful, pulpy noir, noting echoes of the Coen brothers, David Lynch and classic crime writers Raymond Chandler and Jim Thompson. Thompson’s hardboiled fiction is also part of the show’s plot. Readers drawn to that lineage may want to explore Jim Thompson’s crime fiction, though the series does not establish a particular book edition as a featured product.
The Guardian reviewer also reads Lee’s crusading through an Indigenous lens, while questioning his self-righteousness and performed allyship. That is the reviewer’s interpretation of the show, not a definitive statement of creator intent.
