What is The Lost Children about?
This is a documentary about a real rescue, not a scripted survival drama. The four Mucutuy siblings—ages 13, 9, 4 and 11 months—survived after the small plane carrying them crashed in the Colombian Amazon. Their mother and the other adults aboard died. The children were found after 40 days, on June 9, 2023, according to the Associated Press report.

Netflix says the film draws on first-hand testimony and archival material from searchers and family members. Its account brings together the work of Colombian Army personnel and Indigenous volunteer rescuers as well as the children’s family. Netflix announced the film as a story about teamwork and Indigenous knowledge; that is the platform’s promotional framing.
How did the children survive, and how were they found?
The documentary centers on the rescue and the people searching for the siblings. The available reporting establishes that the children spent 40 days in the rainforest and were found on June 9, 2023. The search involved special-forces soldiers and Indigenous volunteers, with sniffer dogs and helicopters used in the effort, the Associated Press reported.

Those details explain the scale and collaborative nature of the search, but they do not establish a complete account of every day the children were missing or precisely how they managed to survive. The film’s use of family and searcher testimony offers perspectives on the event rather than a basis for treating every survival detail as independently verified fact.
Who directed the documentary?
Netflix lists Orlando von Einsiedel, Jorge Durán and Lali Houghton as directors. Netflix’s Media Center entry includes the film’s synopsis, directors and release listing: The Lost Children on Netflix Media Center.
