The Hermès Birkin began with a practical request: Jane Birkin wanted a larger, useful everyday bag. Four decades later, the original prototype made for her sold at Sotheby’s in Paris for €8,582,500—reported as about $10.1 million including fees. That record belongs to one historically documented object, not to Birkin bags generally.
How the Birkin bag began
The familiar origin story starts with a meeting between Jane Birkin and Hermès executive Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight. According to the Associated Press, Birkin described wanting a more practical, larger bag, and Dumas sketched an idea on an airsickness bag. It is a vivid account, but its details are best understood as a reported origin story rather than as a complete independently documented record of the design process.
The dates attached to the story refer to different stages. The design conception is commonly placed in 1984, while Sotheby’s describes the auctioned prototype as made for Birkin in 1985. Those dates need not conflict: one concerns the idea, the other the physical prototype. Sotheby’s account of the sale and the Associated Press report connect the story to the object that later came to auction.
What sold for more than $10 million
On 10 July 2025, Sotheby’s sold Jane Birkin’s original Hermès Birkin prototype in Paris for €8,582,500. Sotheby’s reported the result as €8.6 million, or about $10.1 million; the Associated Press specified that the dollar figure included fees. Guinness World Records lists the same sale at US$10,052,940 and identifies Valuence Japan Inc. as the buyer. These are different reported presentations of one auction result, not separate sale prices.

Guinness World Records identifies the prototype as the most expensive handbag sold at auction in its record entry for the sale. The distinction is essential: this was the original prototype made for Jane Birkin, with direct historical provenance—not a typical production Birkin changing hands in an ordinary retail or resale transaction.
Why the story became fashion lore
A practical idea with a recognizable name
The origin story gives the bag a functional premise rather than a purely decorative one: a request for a roomier, useful accessory. Naming the design for Jane Birkin then tied it to a living cultural figure. The combination of an everyday need and a famous namesake is a durable part of the bag’s appeal.

A prototype with a traceable history
The auctioned bag was not valuable merely because it belonged to a famous product line. Its importance came from its specific identity as the prototype made for Birkin. That provenance—the documented connection between this object, its original intended owner and the bag’s creation—sets it apart from later examples. A one-off, historically connected prototype can attract collectors for reasons that do not transfer to mass-produced or later-made objects.
A record that sharpened the legend
The auction gave the origin story a striking endpoint: an accessory conceived as practical became the subject of a record-setting sale. Morgane Halimi, Sotheby’s head of handbags and fashion, told the Associated Press: “It is incredible to think that a bag initially designed by Hermès as a practical accessory for Jane Birkin has become the most desirable bag in history.”

What the record does—and does not—say about other Birkins
The €8,582,500 result is evidence of the exceptional value collectors placed on this particular prototype at this particular auction. It does not establish typical retail prices, average resale values, how buyers obtain new bags, or whether ordinary Birkins reliably appreciate. The prototype’s identity and provenance are precisely what make it an exceptional case; treating its auction price as a normal benchmark would confuse a singular historical collectible with other bags bearing the same name.
