The One Ring’s journey runs from its forging at Mount Doom around Second Age 1600 to its destruction there on 25 March, Third Age 3019. It passes from Sauron to Isildur, then through Déagol and Sméagol/Gollum, Bilbo, Frodo, and finally back to Gollum at the Cracks of Doom. This chronology follows Tolkien’s books, especially the dated entries in the appendices; adaptations may change events or timing.
Second Age: Sauron forges the Ring and Isildur loses it
| Age and date | Bearer | Location | How it changes hands or is lost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Around S.A. 1600 | Sauron | Mount Doom | Sauron secretly makes the Ring after the other Great Rings have been crafted, putting much of his power into it so he can dominate the others. The date is approximate. Tolkien Gateway’s account of the Rings of Power gives the dating and order; the quoted account from The Silmarillion describes the Ring’s purpose. |
| End of the Second Age | Isildur | From Sauron’s defeat to the Gladden Fields | After Sauron is defeated, Isildur takes the Ring instead of destroying it. Later, as he tries to escape through the river at the Disaster of the Gladden Fields, it slips from him. Orcs kill Isildur, and the Ring is lost in the riverbed. Tolkien Gateway’s One Ring overview recounts this sequence. |
The Ring was made to rule the other Rings, and Sauron’s power was bound up with it. As “Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age” in The Silmarillion puts it: “Now the Elves made many rings; but secretly Sauron made One Ring to rule all the others, and their power was bound up with it, to be subject wholly to it and to last only so long as it too should last.”
Third Age: Déagol finds the Ring, and Sméagol becomes Gollum
Centuries after the Ring disappears in the Gladden Fields, Déagol discovers it while fishing. Sméagol murders Déagol and takes the Ring. Its long hold on Sméagol transforms him into the creature known as Gollum, who keeps it for centuries. The bearer is therefore still Gollum when Bilbo encounters him. Tolkien Gateway’s One Ring overview describes the discovery and transfer.
Third Age 2941–2942: Bilbo finds the Ring and returns to the Shire
| Date | Bearer | Location | Transfer |
|---|---|---|---|
| T.A. 2941 | Bilbo | Under the Misty Mountains | During the events of The Hobbit, Bilbo meets Sméagol-Gollum and finds the Ring. The dated chronology in Appendix B records the year. |
| T.A. 2942 | Bilbo | Returning to the Shire | Bilbo returns home with the Ring. Appendix B records this return in the following year. Appendix B is the source for the dated entry. |
These dates are Tolkien’s book chronology, not a timeline imposed by a screen adaptation. The appendix gives years for Bilbo’s discovery and return, while the narrative guide is secondary context rather than a replacement for the books.

Third Age 3001: Bilbo hands the Ring to Frodo
At Bilbo’s farewell feast in T.A. 3001, the Ring passes to Frodo. Gandalf suspects it may be the One Ring and begins investigating. This transfer starts the chain of events that turns the Ring’s private history into a quest to destroy it. Tolkien Gateway’s overview summarizes the handoff, while Appendix B supplies the dated chronology.
Third Age 3018–3019: Frodo carries the Ring back to Mount Doom
Frodo carries the Ring toward Mordor during the War of the Ring. The Fellowship’s purpose is to destroy it where Sauron made it: Mount Doom. The route reverses the Ring’s origin in a geographical sense, but the Ring remains with Frodo until the final struggle. Tolkien Gateway’s overview summarizes the bearer sequence and destruction.
Rank #2
- When the ring is charged by sunlight or a simple ultraviolet flashlight, beautiful water blue or red orange night lights will appear. When the ring is fully charged, it will glow in the dark.
- The runes on the silver ring emit a beautiful and bright sea blue glow. On the gold ring, runes emit a beautiful orange glow in the darkness. This kind of night light will last for a few minutes.
- The elf inscription on the ring means "One ring rules over them, one ring searches for them, one ring summons them all and binds them in the darkness
- Belt color: silver, gold. Stainless steel will not fade or turn fingers green. It is a safe metal.
- The comfort fit design makes it easier to slide the ring over the knuckle when putting it on or taking it off. This is particularly beneficial for wider or thicker rings.
25 March, T.A. 3019: Gollum takes the Ring, and it is destroyed
At Mount Doom, Frodo claims the Ring rather than casting it into the fire. Gollum takes it in the ensuing struggle, then falls into the fire with it. The Ring is destroyed, and Sauron’s power and works collapse. The final bearer is thus Gollum, though only for the instant before the Ring’s destruction. Tolkien Gateway’s narrative account describes the final events; consult a legitimate edition’s appendices for exact War of the Ring dates.
