The Lonely Child / Dos Elnte Kind: This Is Not A Holocaust Film follows a Yiddish song written in the Vilna Ghetto and the people who perform it today. Its Santa Cruz connection is personal: writer-producer Alix Wall and director Marc Smolowitz were both UC Santa Cruz students. A third-party listing names a Santa Cruz screening for October 15, 2026, at Del Mar Theater, but current festival confirmation is needed before relying on those event details.
What is The Lonely Child about?
The National Center for Jewish Film describes the documentary as a journey into the history and continuing life of “Dos Elnte Kind,” a Yiddish song written in the Vilna Ghetto. Wall, the daughter and granddaughter of people connected to the song’s subjects, seeks out performers to understand what the song means to them now. The film’s focus is not a conventional retelling of Holocaust atrocities: Wall frames it around the song’s present-day performance and reach. The National Center for Jewish Film’s project page gives the full project title and description.
What is the story behind “Dos Elnte Kind”?
According to Wall’s statement on the project page, poet Shmerke Kaczerginski wrote the song in 1943, in the Vilna Ghetto. It tells of Sorele—short for Sarah—a young Jewish girl whose father was killed by Nazis and whose mother sent her into hiding with a gentile nanny. That account is the filmmaker’s description of the song’s history.
Wall’s stated approach is to follow what happened to the song after its creation: who carries it forward, how they perform it, and what its words mean across generations. As she puts it, “The story of the song, however, is happening in the present.” The subtitle, This Is Not A Holocaust Film, is the filmmaker’s framing of that emphasis; it does not mean the film avoids the Holocaust-era history at the song’s center.

Why does the film “come home” to Santa Cruz?
Wall and Smolowitz met as UC Santa Cruz students and later worked together on the documentary. The Santa Cruz connection is therefore more than a screening location: it is where the filmmakers’ paths first crossed. A 2017 profile in the Jewish Standard describes their student connection and the project’s early development. Because that article is historical, its anticipated production timeline should not be read as a current release update.
Is there a Santa Cruz screening, and how can you confirm it?
A third-party event listing names a screening at Del Mar Theater on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 6 p.m., associated with the Santa Cruz Jewish Film Festival / Santa Cruz Film Festival. A local KSQD search result published October 12, 2026, also discusses the film in a Santa Cruz Film Festival feature. Neither item, as available here, establishes that the screening is still scheduled or that tickets are available. Check the festival’s official program or ticket page for the confirmed date, venue, time, and access details before making plans.

What can readers explore about the Paper Brigade?
If the film’s historical context prompts further reading, David Fishman’s The Book Smugglers: Partisans, Poets, and the Race to Save Jewish Treasures from the Nazis is a history of the Paper Brigade. The 2017 Jewish Standard profile reported that Fishman was expected to be interviewed for the film; it does not establish the book as an official companion or tie-in. See the profile’s discussion of the film’s development and related history.
