Spoilers for the full film. The Little Things never reveals who committed the murders. Albert Sparma behaves suspiciously, but the film does not prove he is the killer. Baxter kills Sparma after finding no body where Sparma claimed one was buried. Deke then conceals the death and sends Baxter a new barrette that he can mistake for evidence. The gesture offers comfort, not a solution.
What happens at the end of The Little Things?
Deke and Baxter become convinced that Albert Sparma is their suspect, but conviction is not proof. Sparma takes Baxter to a place where he says a body is buried. Baxter digs and finds nothing. Sparma tells him he is not the killer; Baxter, consumed by the investigation and provoked by Sparma, strikes him with a shovel and kills him.
Deke helps Baxter bury Sparma. Instead of resolving the murders, the killing creates another secret. Deke has spent years carrying guilt over accidentally shooting a woman who was fleeing a killer. Helping Baxter hide Sparma’s death repeats the pattern of concealment that has shaped Deke’s life.
Who is the real killer in The Little Things?
The film leaves the killer’s identity unknown. Sparma’s behavior invites suspicion, but no scene establishes that he committed the murders. The empty burial site does not clear him, either: it only means Baxter finds no body there. The ending withholds the confirmation a conventional crime story might provide.

That distinction matters: “Sparma was the killer” is a possible audience theory, not the film’s answer. John Lee Hancock has described the unresolved ending as deliberate. In a January 2021 interview with TheWrap, the writer-director recalled refusing a request to change the ending so viewers would know the good guy had won. He said, “That’s the whole reason I wrote the script, so I can’t do that.”
Why does Deke send Baxter the barrette?
The red barrette is associated with victim Ronda Rathbun, but it is newly purchased, not a recovered clue. Netflix Tudum’s film recap identifies it as new. Deke sends it to give Baxter something he can treat as confirmation after killing Sparma. It is manufactured certainty meant to spare Baxter the kind of consuming guilt Deke has lived with—not forensic evidence that Sparma was guilty.

The barrette makes a small object carry more meaning than the evidence supports. Baxter can accept it as closure, but it cannot identify the killer or undo what he has done.
Does the ambiguity matter?
Yes. The unanswered case shifts attention from catching a culprit to what the pursuit does to the detectives. Baxter’s need to force an answer ends in a killing; Deke’s attempt to protect him extends a history of guilt and concealment. Whether Sparma was guilty remains uncertain, while the consequences of acting as if suspicion were proof are plain.

Hancock described the film’s approach as taking up familiar crime-story conventions and then subverting them. The Directors Guild of America’s January 2021 Q&A likewise frames the investigation as reviving secrets from Deke’s past. The lack of a reveal is not a hidden solution the audience is expected to decode; it is central to the film’s focus on obsession and the desire to settle uncertainty.

No. Netflix Tudum describes the 2021 John Lee Hancock film, starring Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto, as an original story rather than a true-crime adaptation. Hancock told GQ that he developed the story before spending time with an LA County homicide detective; LAPD homicide detectives also advised the production. That research informed a fictional story, not a dramatization of a named case.
