The Life List finds genuine charm in the idea of revisiting the dreams you left behind, and Sofia Carson gives its central character an appealing mix of vulnerability and resolve. But the 2025 Netflix film’s familiar romantic triangle and predictable turns keep its emotional promise from landing as fully as it might.
What is The Life List about?
In this 2025 Netflix drama, Alex Rose (Sofia Carson) is sent by her mother, Elizabeth (Connie Britton), to complete a bucket list Alex wrote as a teenager. The tasks draw her into family secrets, romance and a reconsideration of the life she has built. Adam Brooks wrote and directed the adaptation of Lori Nelson Spielman’s novel. Netflix describes the film as both a romantic comedy and a family drama; its title page lists it as PG-13 and currently offers watching and downloading, though availability can vary by territory.
The list gives the story a clear engine: each challenge asks Alex to do something beyond her familiar routines. Netflix Tudum identifies tasks including an open-mic night, leading a classroom at a women’s shelter, a charity event and one-on-one basketball. Their importance is less about ticking boxes than about giving Alex concrete reasons to test the ambitions she once imagined for herself.
What works: Carson’s warmth and the film’s personal-growth core
Carson makes Alex easy to root for without presenting her as instantly transformed. The film’s best moments come when the list nudges her toward choices that matter independently of whom she might date. That distinction gives the premise emotional sincerity: rediscovery is not simply a route to a romantic reward.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The family-drama thread also broadens the story beyond a checklist adventure. Elizabeth’s role connects Alex’s assignments to their mother-daughter bond and to loss, giving the list an emotional context rather than making it feel like a string of unrelated dares. The resulting tone is warm and accessible, even when the film leans toward sentiment.
Brooks told Netflix Tudum that the adaptation stays faithful to the book while substantially reinventing it. That is a useful way to approach the film: it draws on the novel’s central premise, but it should not be expected to reproduce it scene for scene.

Where the execution falters
The romance is more familiar than the premise
The romantic triangle supplies friction, but its turns feel predictable beside the more distinctive question of what Alex wants from her own life. It is the film’s least fresh element, and it sometimes pulls attention away from the self-discovery that gives the checklist its purpose.
The running time softens the momentum
The assignments create a natural episodic structure, but not every stretch advances Alex’s inner change or the family story with equal force. Tom’s Guide’s review describes the film as roughly two hours and finds that length bloated. That is one critic’s assessment, not a measure of broad critical consensus, but the pacing concern is visible in how the romantic detours can slow the list’s forward movement.

Tom’s Guide also praises Carson’s performance, the warmth and the visual storytelling while criticizing the predictable outcome and unnecessary triangle. Taken together, those judgments capture the film’s uneven balance: its emotional center is more appealing than the machinery of its plot.

If you enjoy gentle romantic comedies with family drama and a self-reinvention theme, The Life List is an easy choice for its lead performance and hopeful premise. Go in expecting a familiar romance and a leisurely pace rather than a sharply surprising plot. Viewers drawn mainly to original romantic complications may find the checklist’s personal-growth story more rewarding than the love story surrounding it.

The film is based on Lori Nelson Spielman’s novel, also titled The Life List, so the book is a natural companion for readers who want to spend more time with the premise. Brooks’s account of substantial reinvention means the novel is better treated as a related version of the story than as a promise of a scene-by-scene match. Current retailer stock and editions have not been established here.
In a Tudum interview, Britton described the premise as “a very accessible, entertaining way to get to take stock of your own life and what your dreams and goals and desires are.” That invitation is also the film’s most lasting strength: even when its plot feels familiar, the idea of asking what you once hoped to do still has resonance.
