Nintendo released the first official photos from its live-action The Legend of Zelda film on November 17, 2025. They show Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. Nintendo now lists the film’s planned worldwide theatrical release as April 30, 2027.
What the first photos show
The images place Link and Zelda in a lush, green countryside setting, as described in contemporary coverage of the reveal. Nintendo identified the actors and their roles, but the images do not establish what scene is being filmed or which game, if any, supplies the story. Costume and landscape details are not confirmation of an adaptation of Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom or another specific game.
Game Informer’s report on the first photos quoted Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto saying filming was underway in a lush, natural setting. His accompanying message at the time cited a May 7, 2027 release target; Nintendo has since updated the date.
Who plays Link and Zelda?
- Zelda: Bo Bragason.
- Link: Benjamin Evan Ainsworth.
Nintendo’s later announcement continues to identify Bragason and Ainsworth in those roles. The confirmed lead casting does not, by itself, reveal additional cast members or the plot.

When does the Zelda movie come out?
Nintendo’s September 8, 2026 announcement says Sony Pictures plans a worldwide theatrical release on April 30, 2027. That is the current announced date. Earlier reports gave May 7, 2027, but that target was superseded by Nintendo’s September announcement.

What is confirmed about the film?
The film’s official title is The Legend of Zelda, and Nintendo describes it as based on its action-adventure game series, which began in Japan in 1986. Nintendo and Arad Productions are producing it, with Wes Ball directing. Nintendo and Sony Pictures are co-financing the film, with Nintendo providing more than half of the financing; Sony Pictures is handling worldwide theatrical distribution. These details appear in Nintendo’s 2026 announcement and its November 2023 announcement.

Nintendo’s photo announcement confirms the two lead roles and that filming was underway, but it does not identify an adapted game, explain the photographed scene or announce a wider cast. Claims about the story based on the costumes or setting remain speculation. The Associated Press reported in 2023 that Miyamoto described fan expectations as a major challenge, saying, “I realize there are so many Zelda fans, and we cannot betray their expectations. That is a big hurdle. But we are ready.” The comment predates the first photos and is not a reaction to them. Associated Press coverage.
