The Legend of Ochi is a 2025 fantasy adventure written and directed by Isaiah Saxon. It follows Yuri, a shy farm girl raised to fear the forest-dwelling Ochi, who discovers a wounded baby creature and tries to return it to its family. The film pairs that story of fear giving way to empathy with a distinctive mix of practical creature performances and computer-generated effects.
What is The Legend of Ochi about?
Yuri has been taught that the Ochi are dangerous. When she finds a wounded baby Ochi, she sets out to bring it home. The journey turns the film’s central conflict into a question of whether an unfamiliar animal should be feared or understood—a shift from suspicion toward empathy that gives the fantasy adventure its emotional shape.

How were the Ochi made?
The creatures are not all practical effects or all computer-generated. Saxon’s account distinguishes between intimate character performances and action: expressive medium and close-up shots used practical puppetry, while stunts such as running and leaping were created with CG.
Practical performances for expressive shots
Saxon says an animatronic puppet was used for the Ochi’s expressive medium and close-up scenes, with puppeteers and suit performers contributing to the work. These performances were filmed in camera without CG augmentation. Compositing was still used to remove puppeteers and replace backgrounds, so “practical” does not mean that every part of those finished shots was untouched digitally.
Rank #2
- In a remote village on the island of Carpathia, a shy farm girl named Yuri is raised to fear an elusive animal species known as Ochi. But when Yuri discovers a wounded baby Ochi has been left behind, she escapes on the adventure of a lifetime to bring him home.
CG for creature stunts
For actions including leaps and runs, Saxon says the Ochi were fully CG. The film therefore uses effects according to what a scene needs: practical performance for close interaction and facial expression, and digital animation for more demanding movement.
Remote locations and painted environments
Saxon says the production filmed in remote mountain villages in Transylvania and used more than two hundred matte paintings. He also describes ape-suit performers and a realistic animatronic puppet as parts of the production’s creature work. These details come from the filmmaker’s own account in his A24 note; they are not an independent breakdown of every shot.

Is it suitable for children?
The Associated Press reports a PG rating and a runtime of 96 minutes. Its listed content descriptors are “some language, smoking, a bloody image, thematic elements and violent content.” Those descriptors are a more useful guide for family viewing than the film’s fantastical appearance alone; parents can consider how a child responds to violence and a bloody image.
The Associated Press review praises the movie’s creativity and visual craft, while finding some emotional beats less successful than its humor. That is one critic’s assessment, not a measure of consensus. The review appeared on April 23, 2025: Associated Press review.

How can you watch it at home?
In his May 20, 2025 Q&A, Saxon said the film was available to watch at home and linked to an official A24 Blu-ray pre-order. That establishes a home-viewing statement and a physical-media option at the time of the Q&A, but it does not identify current streaming or rental services, confirm that the pre-order remains active, or establish availability in any particular country. Check a local service or retailer for current listings. For a disc search, use the title The Legend of Ochi Blu-ray and verify the edition and regional compatibility before buying.
