The Last Starfighter is returning in a confirmed comic continuation, not a confirmed new movie. What is returning?
Mad Cave Studios is publishing a comic sequel to the film. The publisher says the new story continues from the movie’s ending: Alex is now the Star League’s leader and its sole member, and must rebuild its defense force. The continuation was developed in collaboration with filmmakers Jonathan Betuel and Paul Davidson; Benjamin Raab and Deric A. Hughes are the writers, Willi Roberts is the artist, and Francesco Segala is the colorist. Mad Cave’s listing and Simon & Schuster’s listing describe the book as The Last Starfighter Vol. 1.
That means “returning” refers to the franchise in print. The available reports do not confirm a new theatrical sequel or reboot. Space.com reported on April 20, 2026, that there had been no further theatrical-sequel news as of that date; that report does not establish what may have happened since. Space.com’s report also quotes writer Benjamin Raab describing his involvement as a lifelong fan.
How to tell the sequel comic from the movie adaptation collection

The film’s premise begins with an arcade game that leads Alex Rogan into a real interstellar conflict. Universal’s synopsis frames his recruitment with the Star League’s message: “Greetings, Starfighter! You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier against Xur and the Kodan Armada.” The comic takes up that conflict after the film rather than retelling the movie as its sequel.
