When the trailer arrived—and when Season 2 premiered
HBO released the official trailer during a South by Southwest panel on March 8, 2025. The official trailer description announced the series’ return on April 13. In the United States, the season premiered Sunday, April 13, 2025, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and streamed on Max; Max’s Spanish-language announcement listed Monday, April 14, for its territory. Release dates therefore depended on location. The season has seven episodes.

Warner Bros. Discovery later described the trailer as HBO and Max’s most-watched original trailer and reported 158 million views. The indexed announcement did not specify the measurement window, so that figure should not be read as a particular 24-hour or 72-hour total.
What the official synopsis confirms
The season is set five years after the events of Season 1. HBO’s synopsis says Joel and Ellie are pulled into conflict with each other, while the world around them is more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind. That establishes the broad stakes: their relationship is central, and survival remains precarious. It does not explain the full cause or course of their conflict.

The trailer’s promotional description adds the line “You can’t stop this.” It is presented as marketing copy, not as a quotation attributed to a particular character.
What the footage teases
Ellie and Dina share a dance
Trailer coverage highlights a slow dance between Ellie and Dina. It offers a glimpse of intimacy and a life taking shape amid the violence of the setting, while introducing Dina as a significant presence in Ellie’s story. A brief trailer moment does not establish the full context or outcome of their relationship.
Abby appears in the snow
The footage shows Abby moving through snow. Played by Kaitlyn Dever, she is one of the season’s newly introduced characters. The image signals a harsh environment and a new strand of the story, but it is not enough to determine exactly where it falls in the season or what is happening around her.
Joel and Ellie’s relationship has changed
A Joel-and-Ellie exchange flagged in trailer coverage points to distance between them. That tension fits the official synopsis, which explicitly says the pair are drawn into conflict. The trailer does not, by itself, settle what either character knows, when a particular exchange takes place, or how their disagreement develops.

A glimpse that may carry game spoilers
Coverage also notes a brief image that game-aware viewers may recognize from a later point in The Last of Us Part II. Treat it as a visual echo, not a confirmed guide to episode chronology: trailers can rearrange or excerpt scenes, and the footage alone does not establish exactly how the series will adapt that moment.
Returning and new cast members
The official announcements list the returning leads and introduce a larger group of characters. The casting information identifies who is playing whom; it does not, on its own, confirm how much each character appears or how their stories will be arranged.

A Spanish-language press announcement also identifies Catherine O’Hara as a guest star. Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are named as writers and executive producers. HBO describes the series as an adaptation of Naughty Dog’s PlayStation game franchise.

For viewers who have not played The Last of Us Part II, the safest reading is that the trailer promises a darker continuation with changing relationships and growing danger. Its images suggest tone and conflict, but they do not require you to know the game’s plot to understand the season’s stated premise.

Players may recognize references to the game in the footage, but recognition is not proof of a one-to-one scene adaptation. The trailer does not establish that every recognizable image will occur in the same order, context, or form as in the game. Keeping those interpretations separate from HBO’s confirmed synopsis helps avoid turning a suggestive frame into a spoiler claim.
