Spoilers for all of The Last of Us season 2, episode 7, “Convergence.” Ellie tells Dina that Joel killed Abby’s father and the Fireflies at the Salt Lake City hospital to save her. Dina says they need to go home, but Ellie and Jesse still set out to find Tommy. The episode ends with Ellie and Abby facing off, a gunshot, and a cut to Abby waking at the WLF base on Seattle: Day One.
What happens in “Convergence”?
The season finale opens with Ellie returning to the theater, where Jesse and Dina have already dealt with Dina’s injured leg. In the dressing room, Ellie tells Dina what happened with Nora. She also explains why Abby’s group came after Joel: at the Salt Lake City hospital, Joel killed Abby’s father and the Fireflies to save Ellie.
The disclosure changes what Dina knows about the revenge mission. She says they need to go home. Ellie and Jesse nevertheless leave to look for Tommy, while Dina stays behind because of her injury. Their search takes them into a storm and a clash between the WLF and Seraphites, before the story moves toward the aquarium and theater confrontation with Abby.
Ellie also finds a copy of The Monster at the End of This Book for Dina. The children’s book features Grover, who fears the monster waiting at the end, only to discover that the monster is himself. That reference gives the episode’s title-like motif both a literal and a thematic meaning: the question is not only what danger lies ahead, but who violence may turn someone into.

What does the book mean for Ellie and Dina?
The book’s ending invites a parallel with Ellie’s pursuit of revenge. Ellie is chasing the people she holds responsible, but the story raises the possibility that a pursuer can also become part of the violence they condemn. That is an interpretation, not a declaration that Ellie alone is “the monster”; the episode leaves room to judge the choices and violence of multiple characters.
Dina’s reaction to Ellie’s confession is deliberately not resolved into a single emotion. She says they should go home, and the episode gives viewers her silence and the bracelet as observable details. Those moments can support different readings, but they do not establish that Dina has forgiven Ellie, rejected her, or made a final decision about their relationship.

How does the finale end?
Ellie and Abby finally confront each other. The scene cuts off on a gunshot, withholding the immediate outcome. The show then shifts to Abby waking at the WLF base on Seattle: Day One. Rather than completing the confrontation in the same sequence, the finale redirects attention to Abby’s side of the story and leaves the consequences hanging.
GamesRadar reports that Craig Mazin said the team considered other approaches, including interlacing the two characters’ stories, before settling on the cliffhanger. He described the choice as “part of the genetics of how this story functions.” The cut is therefore a structural choice about timing and perspective, not evidence of a specific season 3 episode count or release date.

Why does the show stop where the game continues?
Game spoilers below. In The Last of Us Part II, the theater sequence continues further before the story transitions. The television version stops at the gunshot and begins Abby’s Seattle: Day One perspective instead. That changes when viewers receive information and how long they wait for the confrontation’s immediate resolution.
Craig Mazin has described adaptation as a matter of using what each medium can do well: “There are things the game can do that we just can’t do as effectively,” he said. “But then there are things we can do that [the game] can’t do. And so, we just take advantage of what we have.” The comparison is more useful as a question of point of view, pacing, and reveal timing than as a checklist of whether every scene is reproduced literally.

The finale also compresses the movement through the Seraphite island sequence and Ellie’s account of Nora and Mel into the television season’s particular rhythm. Those decisions shape suspense and pacing; they do not, by themselves, establish a single correct interpretation of the characters’ choices.
