Spoilers for The Last of Us season 2, episode 7, “Convergence.” The season finale ends on a cliffhanger: Abby confronts Ellie in the theater and fires, leaving Jesse’s fate unconfirmed. Then the story shifts to Abby’s side of the conflict, closing on the title card “Seattle Day One.”
“Convergence,” which originally aired May 25, 2025, is a recap-and-aftermath story rather than a live report. The official companion episode was published the next day.
What happens in “Convergence”?
The finale resumes at the theater, where Jesse is caring for Dina’s injured leg. When Ellie returns from the hospital, she tells Dina what happened with Nora, what she learned about Abby’s location, and the truth about Joel’s decision to save her.
Ellie and Jesse leave to find Tommy. Their journey through Seattle brings them into conflict with both the WLF and the Seraphites, while the two disagree about what matters most: Jesse wants to get home, but Ellie remains focused on finding Abby.

At the aquarium, Ellie encounters Abby’s friends Owen and Mel. Owen is killed, and Mel is fatally wounded. Ellie learns only afterward that Mel is pregnant.
Who dies in The Last of Us season 2 finale?
- Owen: Killed during Ellie’s encounter with him at the aquarium.
- Mel: Fatally wounded in the same sequence. The show changes the game scene’s details, including how she is injured.
- Jesse: Apparently shot when Abby confronts Ellie at the theater, but the finale cuts away without confirming what happens to him.
Ellie is alive when the theater scene ends, and Abby is alive in the final scene. Sky also says Shimmer is alive and well and that Manny remains present in the story.

Is Jesse dead at the end of The Last of Us season 2?
The episode does not confirm Jesse’s fate. Abby fires in the theater, and Jesse appears to be hit and falls, but the scene cuts away before establishing whether he is dead. The accurate answer based on the finale alone is that Jesse is apparently shot and left in a cliffhanger.
Neil Druckmann has discussed Jesse’s fate in the source story, saying, “I don’t think we ever entertained an alternative. His fate was always sealed.” That comment concerns the adaptation decision; it does not resolve what the television episode shows after the cut.

Why does the finale end with Abby?
After the theater confrontation, the episode shifts to Abby. Manny wakes her and tells her she has been summoned to meet Isaac. The “Seattle Day One” title card signals a return to an earlier point in the Seattle timeline, now from Abby’s perspective.
The pivot is a deliberate perspective cliffhanger: instead of resolving Ellie’s confrontation, the finale starts the story over from Abby’s side. The Ringer notes that the show withholds context for the WLF’s planned attack until the next season. The result is an ending that reframes what viewers have seen rather than closing the theater scene.

How the finale differs from The Last of Us Part II
The episode follows much of the game’s story, but the changes affect both the timeline and the details of key events. The show is neither a scene-for-scene retelling nor a wholly different story.
| Area | What the show changes |
|---|---|
| Timeline | The Seraphite island sequence is brought forward. |
| Character in a related scene | The show uses Manny in a scene where the game has Jordan in a related role. |
| Mel’s injury and death | In the game, Mel is not hit by the same bullet that kills Owen; she attacks Ellie with a knife. The show changes the sequence and adds Mel trying to guide Ellie through saving the baby. |
| Shimmer | Shimmer survives in the show. |
| Alice | Druckmann told TheWrap that the creators spared Alice after deciding the episode already contained several disturbing sequences. Craig Mazin explained, “You don’t want to feel exploitative, you don’t want to feel like you’ve crossed some line, so you make some choices.” |
How viewers and critics reacted
Reaction in the available review excerpts was mixed. Some praised the episode on its own terms; others felt it played like an appetizer or moved through its ending too quickly. Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 75% Tomatometer based on 24 reviews at the time accessed in 2026. That is a changeable snapshot of critics’ reviews, not a measure of all viewers or a lasting consensus.
