Spoilers for The Last of Us season 2, episode 6. Officially titled “The Price,” the sixth episode leaves the Seattle storyline behind for a series of Jackson flashbacks. They show how Joel and Ellie’s bond frayed over his account of the Firefly hospital—and bring Joel back for the conversation Ellie needed to hear.
Why does episode 6 bring Joel back?
“The Price” is built around memories from Joel and Ellie’s years in Jackson, rather than continuing the Seattle action from the preceding episodes. The flashbacks gather moments that help explain the distance between them: the affection that held them together, the tension that grew as Ellie questioned Joel’s story, and the truth he had kept from her.
The Television Academy describes the episode as returning to key points in Ellie’s relationship with her surrogate father. In its recap, The Ringer likewise identifies it as the season’s first and only primarily flashback episode, one that fills gaps left by earlier installments. The result is less a detour than a reframing of the present-day estrangement.
What happened between Joel and Ellie in Jackson?
The memories trace a relationship that was once close but became difficult to sustain. Ellie’s questions about the Firefly hospital put pressure on Joel’s version of events. As she tried to understand what happened, the lie became a barrier between them; the flashbacks show that separation developing through ordinary shared history as well as confrontation.

Rather than treating their bond as either wholly repaired or irretrievably broken, the episode lets affection and hurt coexist. That history gives weight to the final conversation: Ellie is not simply forgiving a single mistake, but facing the truth behind years of mistrust.
What does Joel tell Ellie about the Firefly hospital?
Joel admits that he lied about what happened at the hospital. He also tells Ellie he would make the same choice again, even knowing that it cost him their closeness. His honesty does not undo the lie or erase its consequences; it gives Ellie the truth she had been seeking and makes a different kind of conversation possible.

What does the ending of “The Price” mean?
The final exchange gives Joel and Ellie a moment of reconciliation and leaves room for forgiveness. It is an emotional resolution, not a declaration that their conflict has vanished. The lie still shaped their relationship, and the episode does not suggest that one conversation can restore everything they had lost.
That distinction is the point of the ending: Joel can tell the truth and Ellie can begin to respond to it, but neither action changes what happened between them. The episode closes on possibility rather than a complete repair.

How does the episode arrange the story differently from the game?
The television version concentrates earlier relationship scenes in a flashback-centered episode. The game The Last of Us Part II distributes its flashbacks differently, so the show’s arrangement puts Joel and Ellie’s shared history in direct conversation with the estrangement established in the current storyline. That comparison can help explain the adaptation’s structure, but the episode’s emotional stakes are clear without knowing the game.
