The Last First: Winter K2 tells the story of K2’s first winter ascent in January 2021 alongside a season marked by five climbers’ deaths. The ten Nepali climbers who reached the summit made mountaineering history; the documentary also examines the expedition’s competing strategies and the pressures of money, power and commercialization. Those events belong in the same account, but neither the achievement nor the tragedy, by itself, settles questions of responsibility.

What happened on K2 in winter 2021?

Before 2021, K2 was the last 8,000-meter peak without a winter ascent, a goal the American Alpine Club described as the final remaining winter-ascent problem. On January 16, ten Nepali climbers reached the summit, completing the first winter ascent of the 8,611-meter mountain. The American Alpine Club’s account places the climb in the context of the season’s expedition, while Guinness World Records records the date, elevation and team size.

The first ascent was a major achievement. It was not the season’s only defining event: five climbers died during the 2020–21 winter season, in separate incidents documented by The Himalayan Club.

The five climbers who died

  • Sergi Mingote
  • Atanas Skatov
  • Muhammad Ali Sadpara
  • John Snorri Sigurjónsson
  • Juan Pablo Mohr Prieto

These names should not be collapsed into one accident or treated as members of the January 16 summit team. The winter ascent and the deaths are connected by the season and the mountain, but the available accounts describe distinct incidents.

Who made the first winter ascent of K2?

Ten Nepali climbers reached K2’s summit on January 16, 2021, making the first winter ascent. Guinness World Records identifies the team size and date; the American Alpine Club provides expedition context. This was a collective achievement, not a claim that the season’s other climbers shared the summit or the same outcome.

What is The Last First: Winter K2 about?

The film focuses on Icelandic climber John Snorri Sigurjónsson and Pakistani climbers Ali Sadpara and his son Sajid. Apple TV Press’s official description frames the expedition as a layered story of strategy and determination, as well as class and caste, money and power. These are the documentary’s chosen lenses on the expedition, not a finding that establishes who caused any death.

The Associated Press review characterizes the film as a critique of mountaineering’s commercialization and reports that Colin O’Brady voiced concern for people’s safety. That is the review’s account of the film; it should not be mistaken for an independently checked transcript or treated as proof of a definitive causal conclusion. Read the Associated Press review.

What the film’s argument can—and cannot—settle

A documentary can foreground conflicts and ask viewers to weigh decisions; those choices are not the same as an official or legal determination of responsibility. The sources cited here establish the first-ascent chronology, name the five climbers who died, and describe the film’s themes. They do not establish a definitive causal finding against an individual or company.

Keeping those distinctions clear does not diminish the summit or the deaths. It lets the historic first ascent be recognized without treating success as automatic justification for every decision, and lets the season’s losses be confronted without turning them into proof of an allegation that the cited accounts do not establish.
