The giant illuminated orb in Las Vegas is Sphere, an entertainment venue built around two enormous LED display systems: a programmable exterior called the Exosphere and a high-resolution screen that wraps around audiences inside. Sphere Entertainment put the project’s near-completion cost estimate at approximately $2.3 billion in 2023—not a final audited total.
What is the giant sphere in Las Vegas?
Sphere is a live-entertainment venue near the Las Vegas Strip, not simply a freestanding screen. It opened to the public on September 29, 2023. The Associated Press reported around opening that the building was 366 feet high and 516 feet wide, with seating for 17,500 people. Those are AP’s reported figures, not a current capacity or engineering specification. The Associated Press’s opening report placed it in the city’s visitor and live-entertainment landscape.
The venue was announced for concerts and residencies, marquee events, and original immersive productions. U2 and Postcard from Earth were part of the 2023 opening plan; those are historical examples, not a statement of what is currently showing. Sphere Entertainment’s 2023 release described those plans.
How much did the Las Vegas Sphere cost?
Sphere Entertainment estimated the project at approximately $2.3 billion in May 2023, inclusive of core technology and soft costs. The company said this replaced its previous $2.175 billion estimate and attributed the increase primarily to project complexity. It also reported approximately $2.08 billion in construction costs paid through May 9, 2023, net of $65 million received from The Venetian Resort. These are company-reported figures from as construction neared completion, not a final audited cost. The familiar “$2 billion” description rounds the estimate down. The company’s 2023 filing-hosted release provides the estimate and payment context.

Why does the Sphere look like a giant illuminated orb?
Its striking appearance comes from a programmable LED surface covering the outside of a spherical building. Sphere Entertainment calls this exterior display the Exosphere and reported its area as 580,000 square feet. It can show large images visible around Las Vegas, making the architecture itself part of the venue’s visual presentation.
The exterior is distinct from the screen inside. Sphere Entertainment reported that the interior LED display plane covers 160,000 square feet and has a resolution of 16K by 16K. It wraps above and around the audience, extending the visual experience beyond a conventional stage-facing screen. The company said 7thSense technologies power the venue’s signature interior and exterior LED displays; the dimensions and resolution are company-reported specifications. Sphere Entertainment’s announcement of its 7thSense display partnership gives those details.
James Dolan, Sphere Entertainment’s executive chairman, described the venue as “a new medium.” He also said, “When you’re in the Sphere, you don’t get told what to look at. The audience decides what they want to focus on.” That helps explain the distinction: the interior display surrounds the audience’s field of view, while the Exosphere turns the building’s exterior into a city-scale canvas. The Associated Press reported Dolan’s comments.

How is it different from a conventional arena?
The contrast is not just size. A conventional arena typically centers attention on a stage or playing surface; Sphere adds an exterior display and an interior screen designed to surround the audience. Its announced programming also spans concerts, marquee events, and original immersive productions. AP reported a 17,500-seat audience around opening, but the available figures do not establish a like-for-like ranking against other venues on operating cost, energy use, ticket prices, or audience satisfaction.
Sphere Entertainment’s David Dibble, CEO of MSG Ventures, characterized the screens as unusually large and clear, while calling the exterior a dynamic canvas. Those are company-attributed claims rather than an independent comparative test. The company’s display-partnership announcement includes his description.
