Nathalie Emmanuel plays Zee, a contract killer who refuses to murder a blinded young woman—a decision that draws former associates and a determined detective into the hunt. It is a new version of Woo’s story, not David Fincher’s unrelated 2023 film with the same title.
What is The Killer (2024) about?
Zee (Nathalie Emmanuel) is a feared contract killer working in Paris. When she refuses an assignment to kill a young woman who has been blinded, Zee becomes the target of a manhunt involving her former associates and a police detective. The threatened woman is identified as Jenn, a singer, and the detective as Sey in the Los Angeles Times’ review.
Universal Pictures lists Emmanuel alongside Omar Sy, Sam Worthington and Diana Silvers. The film is an action thriller, with French and English dialogue and subtitles, according to the Los Angeles Times.
How does the 2024 film differ from Woo’s 1989 original?
Both films begin from a recognizable premise, but the 2024 version moves the story from Hong Kong to Paris and makes the central assassin a woman. It also changes plot mechanics and character relationships rather than reproducing the earlier film scene for scene. The Guardian describes the result as a Paris-set update and finds it lighter and less operatic than the original; those are the reviewer’s judgments, not production facts.

Woo discussed the gender change in a 2024 interview with TheWrap: “That really excited me. I had never shot a female hero. I said, ‘Okay, that made me interested to do that,’” he said. TheWrap also reported that during production Woo called it “another version of ‘The Killer’” rather than a remake. “Remake” can work as a broad label, but “reimagining” better conveys the changes.
What is the film’s style like?
The Guardian’s review presents the film as an opportunity to watch Woo return to familiar action territory with evident enjoyment. The Los Angeles Times highlights his use of elaborate stunts, camera movement and editing shaped around the choreography, while criticizing the digital cinematography and CGI bloodletting. These reviews offer distinct critical responses rather than a single settled verdict.
