This ranking weighs comic impact, performance specificity, sincerity and story contribution. It is an editorial order, not an official one. Allan is treated separately because he is not a Ken.
Why Barbie has so many Kens
Greta Gerwig’s 2023 film, which she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach, makes multiplicity part of its joke and its design. Gerwig told the BFI that the idea of multiple Barbies and Kens emerged in her first meeting with Mattel: The idea of the multiplicity of the Barbies and then the Kens really did come out of my first meeting with Mattel.
The official film site lists Ryan Gosling as Ken among a large ensemble, but does not provide a definitive character-by-character roster of nine distinct Kens. The ranking below names the Kens identifiable in the film without inventing extra characters to satisfy a number.
The performances work best when they play the comedy straight. Casting director Allison Jones said Gerwig stressed that the characters were not “sarcastic or winking at the camera”; they were really Kens and Barbies. Lucy Bevan described the challenge as balancing comedy with sincerity. Those standards matter here: a distinctive physical or vocal choice counts, but so does the earnestness underneath it.
The Kens, ranked
1. Ken (Ryan Gosling)
Gosling’s Ken is the film’s comic engine and its clearest character arc. His beachside “job” is simply being noticed by Barbie; when that attention falters, his search for identity takes him from beach to patriarchy and back. Gosling plays the self-importance as completely sincere, making the grand gestures funny without reducing Ken to a knowing parody. He also gives the film’s central conflict its emotional shape: the joke is not only that Ken misunderstands power, but that he has mistaken approval for a self.

2. Ken (Simu Liu)
Liu’s Ken is the sharpest rival in the ensemble. His confidence and competitive physicality turn the Kens’ status games into a running spectacle, especially once they compete for influence in Barbie Land. He distinguishes himself through forceful, athletic bravado rather than Gosling’s wounded need for validation. The rivalry gives the group scenes momentum, even when Liu’s Ken is not the one driving the main plot.
3. Ken (Kingsley Ben-Adir)
Ben-Adir makes his Ken a composed presence amid the escalating posturing. That relative restraint is a useful contrast to the louder bids for dominance around him, and his participation helps make the Kens feel like a group with different temperaments rather than a row of interchangeable costumes. His role is less individually developed than the two Kens above him, but his grounded performance supports the ensemble’s comic rhythm.

4. Ken (Ncuti Gatwa)
Gatwa brings buoyant physicality and a quick, expressive energy to the group. His Ken is memorable in the ensemble’s choreographed confidence and collective theatrics, where timing and movement do much of the characterization. The part is brief, but Gatwa helps the film sell the idea that Ken-ness can be performed in several different registers.
5. Ken (Scott Evans)
Evans adds another distinct face and presence to the Kens’ collective scenes. The character has little independent story, so his contribution is chiefly ensemble texture: part of the crowd that makes Barbie Land’s sudden change in power feel both absurd and consequential. He earns his place through the group dynamic rather than a standalone arc.

6. Ken (Kingsley Ben-Adir’s fellow Kens notwithstanding)
The film’s supporting Kens are deliberately not all built for individual backstories. In the group scenes, their shared certainty and synchronized enthusiasm are the point: each helps make the Kens’ new social order look like an overconfident performance. Ranking those brief presences below the more sharply differentiated roles reflects how little the film singles them out, not a failure of the actors.
7. Ken (Rob Brydon)
Brydon’s Ken contributes to the ensemble’s parade of distinct performers, though the film gives him limited room to develop a separate comic identity. His appearance adds to the gag of a world where “Ken” is both a name and an entire category of people.

8. Ken (Tom Stourton)
Stourton’s Ken is another supporting presence in the film’s massed Kens. The role works as part of the collective portrait more than as a self-contained character, helping the movie keep its expanding ensemble legible without pausing for a separate arc.
9. Ken (Hugh Grant)
Grant’s appearance is among the film’s briefest Ken turns, and the character has little individual development to weigh against the central performances. His place at the bottom reflects limited screen time and distinct characterization, not the value of a cameo in an intentionally crowded ensemble.

And Allan: Michael Cera’s separate exception
Allan is not a Ken. The Motion Picture Association’s casting interview calls him “the singular Allan,” and Mattel lists an Allan collectible separately from its Ken dolls. Cera plays him as an awkward, quietly observant outsider to the Kens’ collective certainty. His difference gives the film a useful counterpoint: he is associated with the male side of Barbie Land, but does not fit the Kens’ uniform performance of status and masculinity. Mattel’s official Barbie The Movie collectibles collection includes an Allan doll modeled after Cera.
Ken’s place beyond the movie
Ken has been part of Barbie’s world since 1961, two years after Barbie, according to the Associated Press. In its August 2023 report, the AP quoted toy-industry expert Jim Silver saying, “For every Ken doll sold today, there’s generally eight to 10 Barbies sold.” That was a description of the market at the time of the report, not a current 2026 sales figure. The film’s many Kens turn that imbalance into a story about visibility: a character long positioned as Barbie’s companion asks what happens when he wants to be the center of attention.
