The Kaurs of 1984: The Untold, Unheard Stories of Sikh Women is a 2024 book by Sanam Sutirath Wazir, published by HarperCollins India. Its description presents it as an interview- and research-based account centered on Sikh women’s experiences connected to the 1984 violence. It is a documentary-minded work of testimony, not a claim that any one set of accounts represents every Sikh woman.

What the book sets out to document

The publisher’s description says Wazir documents women who were inside the Golden Temple, women connected to militants, and survivors of sexual violence. These are accounts of distinct and traumatic experiences; the description does not establish that they are representative of all Sikh women or all those affected by the violence.

In a 2024 interview with Hindustan Times, Wazir described his purpose as “the urgent need to document the firsthand testimonies of survivors of the 1984 violence.” He also said he wanted to look beyond the immediate violence to its longer-term effects on women and their continuing struggles.

What the contents indicate

The Kerala State Central Library catalog lists sections that combine historical framing, places, and individual stories. Titles include “Saka Neela Tara-Operation Blue Star,” “Chaurasi ki Na Insafi,” “Sultanpuri,” “Raj Nagar,” “Mukherjee Nagar,” “Hondh,” and “November 1984.” Other listed sections include “From pens to guns,” “Militant bride,” “The daughter of a cop,” “Letters from jail,” and “Widows in Delhi.” The catalog list points to a range of settings and experiences, but does not by itself establish the details or arguments of each chapter.

A critical reading of its place in the record

In a review for Scroll.in, Swati Rai frames the book as bringing women’s accounts into historical narratives where they have often been marginalized, and draws attention to gendered dimensions of violence. That is the reviewer’s critical interpretation of the work, rather than a settled scholarly consensus.

Wazir’s stated aim is also specific: he says he wanted to document testimony and explore longer-term effects. The available book and catalog descriptions support identifying it as a collection centered on women’s accounts; they do not establish the interview methods, consent protocols, completeness of the historical record, or independent verification of each testimony. Readers assessing its historical claims should distinguish the women’s narrated experiences, the author’s framing, and a reviewer’s interpretation.
