Among prominent live-action screen portrayals of the Joker, Jack Nicholson has the highest published net-worth estimate found: $400 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth’s page updated July 22, 2026. Joaquin Phoenix’s estimates disagree—$80 million from Celebrity Net Worth and $60 million from Wealthy Gorilla—so the ranking is approximate, not a definitive accounting of the actors’ fortunes.
This comparison covers prominent live-action screen portrayals, including the actors named in Entertainment Weekly’s 2024 retrospective: Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, Jared Leto, Cameron Monaghan and Joaquin Phoenix. It does not attempt to include voice actors, brief cameos or characters inspired by the Joker. The performances are distinct interpretations, not chapters in a single continuous biography: the Washington Post’s 2019 ranking discusses several of the best-known screen Jokers, while DC describes Phoenix’s 2019 film as a standalone story centered on Arthur Fleck (DC’s film page).

How the net-worth ranking works
The numbers below are estimates published by entertainment wealth sites, not audited disclosures from the actors. They do not establish a person’s current assets and liabilities, and the sites can revise their figures. For living actors, the table gives the named estimate and the date or status shown by its publisher. Ledger’s and Romero’s numbers are estimates at death, not current net worths. Phoenix’s two different estimates are shown rather than collapsed into a misleadingly precise figure.
| Order | Actor | Published estimate | Publisher and date/status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Jack Nicholson | $400 million | Celebrity Net Worth; page updated July 22, 2026 |
| 2 | Joaquin Phoenix | $80 million; alternatively $60 million | Celebrity Net Worth; accessed 2026, and Wealthy Gorilla; page updated October 2, 2026 |
| 3 | Jared Leto | $35 million | Celebrity Net Worth; page updated September 1, 2026 |
| 4 | Heath Ledger | $16 million at death in 2008 | Celebrity Net Worth; historical estimate at death |
| 5 | Cesar Romero | $2 million at death in 1994 | Celebrity Net Worth; historical estimate at death |
| Unranked | Cameron Monaghan | No comparable estimate located | No supported figure available for this comparison |
This is an ordering of the figures located, not a verified league table of personal wealth. Inflation-adjusted amounts are not mixed into the nominal estimates; doing so would compare different units. The death-era estimates are included because the actors belong to this live-action scope, but they are not directly comparable to estimates for living performers.

1. Jack Nicholson — $400 million estimated
Celebrity Net Worth puts Nicholson at $400 million on a page updated July 22, 2026. It is the highest published estimate among the five performers in this comparison for whom a figure was located. Nicholson’s screen Joker is one of the performances commonly included in retrospectives of the role, including the Washington Post’s 2019 ranking.
2. Joaquin Phoenix — estimates range from $60 million to $80 million
Celebrity Net Worth estimates Phoenix’s net worth at $80 million, while Wealthy Gorilla lists $60 million and says its page was updated October 2, 2026. The sources do not explain enough to reconcile the $20 million difference. Treat either number as that publisher’s estimate, not as a settled figure. Phoenix played Arthur Fleck in DC’s standalone 2019 film, rather than a continuation of another actor’s Joker story.
Rank #2
3. Jared Leto — $35 million estimated
Celebrity Net Worth lists Leto at $35 million on a page updated September 1, 2026. That is the published estimate located for him here; it is not an independently verified accounting. Leto is among the live-action portrayals named in Entertainment Weekly’s retrospective.
4. Heath Ledger — $16 million estimated at death
Celebrity Net Worth reports Ledger’s wealth as $16 million at the time of his death in 2008. This is a historical estimate, not a current net-worth figure. It therefore belongs in a separate interpretive category from the estimates for living actors, even though a simple numerical ordering places it below Leto’s estimate.

Rank #3
5. Cesar Romero — $2 million estimated at death
Celebrity Net Worth reports Romero’s wealth as $2 million at his death in 1994. Like Ledger’s figure, it is a historical estimate, not a present-day net worth. Romero’s place in a live-action comparison is clear: he played the Joker in the 1960s television series and appears in the Washington Post’s retrospective ranking. A University Press of Kentucky biography, Cesar Romero: The Joker Is Wild, offers further reading about the actor, but it is not the source of this wealth estimate.
Why Cameron Monaghan is unranked
Monaghan is included in Entertainment Weekly’s 2024 account of live-action Joker portrayals, but no comparable net-worth estimate was located for him. Acting credits alone cannot establish a reliable figure, so assigning a number or placing him in the ranking would be speculation.
