Some Christian Evangelicals on TikTok expected the Rapture on September 23, 2025. The date passed without the predicted event, and online posts ranged from reported preparations to jokes and memes about life carrying on. “We’re all still here, aren’t we?” wrote Forbes contributor Dani Di Placido the next day.
What was supposed to happen on September 23?
Di Placido’s Forbes article, published September 24 and updated September 25, 2025, reported that some Christian Evangelicals on TikTok anticipated the Rapture on Tuesday, September 23. In Christian belief, the Rapture refers to believers being gathered to Christ; the article focused on the online prediction and the reactions around it, not on a consensus among Christians.
September 23 came and went without the event predicted in those posts. The date was a specific expectation reported by Di Placido, not evidence that Christians broadly shared the prediction.
What is RaptureTok?
“RaptureTok” is a shorthand for TikTok posts and discussion about the Rapture. In Di Placido’s account, some users spoke about preparing for it, while others watched, reacted, or turned the expectation into comedy. The reporting describes examples, not a measured or representative picture of TikTok as a whole.

Reported preparations and sincere belief
The Forbes article describes people making plans involving homes, cars, and pets. It also recounts a North Carolina TikTok user filming the sky. These are examples reported by Di Placido; they do not establish how many people prepared, or how typical those actions were.
Jokes, memes, and uncertainty
Other posts responded with jokes and memes, including humor about the prediction failing and everyday life continuing. Di Placido notes that skits and jokes could make it difficult to tell sincere reactions from satire. A viral-looking post, on its own, does not settle whether its creator believed the prediction.

The article also recounts observers wondering whether users had made major life decisions because of the prediction. That is reported speculation, not independent verification that people did so.
Why did people joke that the internet was disappointed?
The headline’s “disappointed” is playful rather than a claim that the internet had one shared reaction. Some believers had anticipated the event; some observers made comedy out of the failed date, and the contrast supplied the joke. Di Placido’s opening—“We’re all still here, aren’t we?”—captures the wry tone while pointing to the ordinary day that followed.

It is more precise to separate the voices: reported believers’ expectations, observers’ humor, and commentary offered afterward. None stands in for all TikTok users or for Christians generally.
How does the story compare with the Great Disappointment?
Di Placido places the 2025 episode within a longer history of failed predictions about the Apocalypse, the Second Coming, or the Rapture. The article invokes the Great Disappointment associated with William Miller’s 1844 prediction as a comparison: both involve a date-specific religious expectation that was not fulfilled as anticipated.

In a September 27, 2025 reflection, Rev. Jeanne Loveless of the United Church of Hayward offered a contrasting theological perspective. She criticized Rapture interpretations she considers harmful and directed attention toward caring for people in need. That is Loveless’s pastoral viewpoint, not a neutral summary of Christian theology or a position that can be attributed to Christians generally.
