The Instigators has an easygoing pair of leads and a Boston chase to build its heist comedy around, but its loose, low-stakes approach can leave the caper short on tension. Matt Damon and Casey Affleck give the film its most reliable spark; whether that is enough depends on how much plot momentum you want from a crime comedy.
What is The Instigators about?
Rory (Matt Damon), a desperate father, and Cobby (Casey Affleck), an ex-con, are drawn into robbing a corrupt politician. The robbery goes wrong, and the pair find themselves pursued by police, bureaucrats and crime bosses. They also bring Rory’s therapist, played by Hong Chau, into their escape.
Doug Liman directs from a screenplay by Chuck MacLean and Casey Affleck. The ensemble includes Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, Toby Jones, Jack Harlow and Ron Perlman.
Do Damon and Affleck make a good comedy duo?
The central contrast is the movie’s clearest comic asset: Rory is anxious and comparatively steady, while Cobby is loose and deadpan. Damon gives Rory a frazzled urgency; Affleck’s underplayed delivery supplies a counterweight. Their scenes have a relaxed, amiable rhythm that suits a buddy comedy better than a high-wire caper.

That rapport is also asked to carry a lot. The film’s most appealing moments come from the two men reacting to trouble in different registers, rather than from especially sharp comic set pieces. If the pairing is the main draw, there is enough warmth to make the ride pleasant. If you need the jokes and plot to keep escalating together, the film is less dependable.
Does the heist create suspense?
The premise promises a botched robbery that keeps tightening the screws. Instead, the complications can feel more like a sequence of interruptions than a carefully escalating puzzle. The pursuit adds danger, but the caper does not always make its risks feel urgent or its turns surprising.

That gap between ingredients and payoff is reflected in the critical reception. Rotten Tomatoes’ current consensus praises the leads’ charm while saying the caper loses intrigue and momentum. Its page includes sharply negative and more measured reviews from 2024, including Wendy Ide of the Observer, who called it a “dispiriting and predictable drag,” and Barry Hertz of the Globe and Mail, who wrote that “nothing quite clicks.” These are examples from an aggregator, not a unanimous judgment or a complete survey of viewers.
How are the pacing, action and Boston setting?
Apple’s US listing gives the film a runtime of 1 hour 41 minutes. That is compact for a chase-driven crime comedy, but brevity alone does not guarantee pace: the shifting threats provide motion, while the laid-back performance style sometimes softens the suspense they are meant to create.

Boston is more than a name in the setup. The production used local locations for chase sequences, according to the Associated Press, giving the pursuit a grounded city setting. In its May 2024 pre-release report, Liman described joining the Damon and Affleck collaborators as “being parachuted into someone else’s family.” He also called their independent-minded working atmosphere “my favorite kind of filmmaking.” Producer Kevin Walsh described the movie as “a kind of ‘throwback’ movie,” in the vein of Midnight Run. Those remarks help explain the film’s convivial, collaborative feel, even if the finished caper does not consistently deliver that older model’s momentum.
Is The Instigators a comedy or a heist movie?
Apple classifies it as action/comedy, and it plays as a crime caper with buddy-comedy instincts. The humor comes chiefly from the contrast between Rory and Cobby; the heist and pursuit provide the framework. Its shaggy, unhurried tone is a reasonable fit for the pair, but it can also undercut the danger and suspense a robbery story needs.

Where can you watch The Instigators?
Apple announced a limited theatrical opening on August 2, 2024, followed by a global Apple TV+ debut on August 9, 2024. Apple TV is the direct streaming option shown on Apple’s listing; availability, subscription terms and offers vary by region and can change. The US listing labels the film R for pervasive language and some violence; that rating applies to the US, not necessarily other territories.
For listeners interested in the score, Apple Music lists Christophe Beck’s The Instigators (Apple Original Film Soundtrack), dated August 2, 2024, with 24 songs and a 40-minute total runtime. That listing verifies a digital album; it does not establish a physical CD or vinyl release.
