The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled to open in theaters on November 20, 2026. As of October 8, 2026, that is 43 days away—not one year. The new film adapts Suzanne Collins’s novel and follows Haymitch Abernathy during the fiftieth Hunger Games.
What is the new Hunger Games film?
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is the next announced film in the franchise, based on Suzanne Collins’s novel of the same name. Lionsgate announced the adaptation and its theatrical date in 2024. Where does Sunrise on the Reaping fit in the story?
The story takes place on the morning of the fiftieth Hunger Games, known as the Second Quarter Quell. In this special reaping, twice as many tributes are taken from their homes. Haymitch Abernathy is selected in District 12 and sent to the Capitol with three other tributes from his district. The official film site
That premise places the film before the original trilogy’s events and makes Haymitch—not Katniss Everdeen—the central figure. It also gives the film a point of comparison with the earlier prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes: both explore an earlier era of the Games, while Sunrise on the Reaping focuses on the Second Quarter Quell and a young Haymitch.

When and where can you watch it?
Lionsgate has announced a theatrical release for November 20, 2026, and the official film site advertises theatrical and IMAX availability. Which book or edition is available?
The novel Sunrise on the Reaping was published on March 18, 2025, in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, according to Lionsgate’s announcement. For a reader mainly interested in the new film’s story, the source novel is the direct starting point. The five-book box set is a broader option for someone beginning the franchise’s book series rather than focusing only on Haymitch’s Games.
