In a May 2023 trend report, New York City-based fashion stylist Michaela Snavely described a shift away from thin, mirrored wraparounds toward oversized metal and acetate sunglasses. The looks she highlighted mixed retro references with contemporary design—but this was one stylist’s fashion assessment, not a measured ranking of what consumers were buying or a forecast for 2026.
What the stylist said was changing
Snavely framed the shift as a move on from slim, mirrored frames associated with Y2K style toward bigger silhouettes and more prominent frames. In the report, she put it this way: “We are emerging out of the TikTok gas station/drugstore thin, wraparound mirrored lenses trend (powered by Balenciaga, Y2K style, Kim Kardashian) and into oversized metal frames and acetate styles (think: Miu Miu, Acne Studios, Loewe, Gucci, Chanel).”
Her contrast is about the visual language of the frames: streamlined and sporty on one side, oversized and more expressive on the other. It does not establish that one style had overtaken another in sales or everyday wear.

Why other 2023 roundups listed different styles
There was no single agreed-upon list of the year’s trends. A separate Pretavoir eyewear article from June 5, 2023, also named rimless, cat-eye, gold-rim, oversized, sporty wraparound and black-square styles. The overlap around oversized frames sits alongside quite different silhouettes, including sporty wraparounds and minimal rimless designs.
That variety is a useful qualification: trend roundups select styles through different editorial lenses. Snavely’s report emphasizes a change in mood, while the additional roundup shows that multiple frame shapes were being discussed in 2023. Neither list, by itself, measures how common a style was among shoppers.

What the runway count does—and does not—show
Rolling Stone’s 2023 report quoted Snavely saying that 20 of 51 looks in Acne Studios’ Fall 2023 ready-to-wear collection appeared with eyewear. That figure is a runway observation attributed to Snavely; it is not a market statistic, and it does not show what proportion of consumers wore sunglasses from the same trend.

The clearest way to compare the looks is by silhouette, material and styling reference: a large butterfly shape differs visually from a slim wraparound; metal reads sleek in Snavely’s description, while acetate allows more color and pattern; and retro influence can be paired with a contemporary finish. Those are fashion distinctions only. The cited trend coverage does not establish differences in UV protection, durability, comfort or optical performance, which depend on the particular sunglasses rather than the trend label.

Seen in its proper time frame, the 2023 story is less a definitive list of winners than a record of a stylist’s preferred direction: bigger, retro-inflected frames, especially in metal or expressive acetate, alongside enduring simple options and competing sporty or minimal shapes.
