The “John Cena prank call” is a radio segment attributed to Virginia’s Z104 Zoo Radio Show and reported in 2012. It uses John Cena’s wrestling theme during a call to a fan’s wife. The later “Unexpected John Cena” meme is a different format: a short, edited burst of Cena’s entrance audio dropped into unrelated videos for surprise. The available sources do not establish whether every part of the original call was spontaneous or how it was produced.
Where the John Cena prank call came from
WrestleZone reported on December 27, 2012, that the recording was a prank-call segment from the Z104 Zoo Radio Show in Virginia. The report describes the show calling a fan’s wife and notes the use of John Cena’s theme, along with mild profanity that was censored in the clip. Read WrestleZone’s 2012 report.
The USC Digital Folklore Archives also dates the broadcast to 2012. Its entry provides corroborating context, though its page text was not directly available; the date should therefore be treated as supporting rather than independently inspected detail. USC Digital Folklore Archives entry.
These accounts support describing the recording as a radio prank segment. They do not prove that the call was wholly spontaneous, nor do they document how the segment was made. It is more accurate to leave that question open than to label the call definitively authentic or staged.

How the radio segment became a meme
The radio call and the “Unexpected John Cena,” “And His Name is John Cena,” or “It’s John Cena” meme are related, but they are not the same thing. The call is a longer exchange framed as a prank; the meme is a brief edited interruption that places a recognizable Cena reveal into unrelated material.
Know Your Meme describes the meme’s mechanism as inserting Cena’s WWE introduction and theme into other videos to create a sudden comic surprise. The Ringer’s 2022 feature likewise focuses on the unexpected, loud reveal and the way Cena’s outsized wrestling persona suits this kind of format. Know Your Meme’s entry · The Ringer’s 2022 feature.

What is established—and what is not
The clearest account of the original segment is the contemporaneous 2012 WrestleZone report, which identifies the show, the call’s target, and the use of Cena’s theme. Know Your Meme and The Ringer help explain how the audio became a repeatable surprise format. Together, these sources distinguish the reported radio prank from the later edits without settling the call’s exact production method.
