But the list is not a ranking of the world’s highest-paid TV stars: Forbes’ figures cover actors’ entertainment-project earnings and consist almost entirely of movie income. Its second-place earner was Margot Robbie at $59 million, followed by Tom Cruise at $45 million.
Forbes’ highest-paid actors of 2023
Forbes published this ranking on March 6, 2024. The amounts below are its estimates of pretax earnings tied to projects released in calendar-year 2023, after deducting representation fees. Gross estimates are included in parentheses.

Forbes estimated that the ten actors together earned $449 million. It compiled its estimates using interviews with agents, lawyers, managers, executives and other industry experts, alongside IMDbPro and Polestar data. The figures are not audited personal financial statements, confirmed cash received during 2023, or net worth estimates.
Why this is not a list of TV salaries
Forbes says the earners came almost exclusively from movies. The title’s “TV stars” wording therefore overstates what the ranking measures: it cannot establish who earned the most specifically from television. The 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes halted Hollywood for much of the year, delaying or shortening TV seasons, while film contracts and backend participation contributed heavily to the earnings picture.

Television-related income does appear in the reporting. Forbes mentions Jennifer Aniston’s Friends residuals and work on The Morning Show, but that example does not provide a basis for assigning television salaries to the other actors on the list. Forbes’ ranking also excludes endorsement income, as CBS News notes in its reproduction of the figures.
How to read the estimates
- They are attributed by release year. Forbes credits a project to the year it was released, even if an upfront fee was paid earlier or backend participation arrived later. A 2023 ranking is not necessarily a record of money deposited in actors’ accounts during 2023.
- The listed estimate is not the gross. Forbes presents estimated earnings after representation fees and shows a corresponding gross figure in parentheses. For Sandler, for example, the two estimates are $73 million and $97 million.
- Income sources are not itemized uniformly. Film fees, streaming arrangements, residuals, stand-up and backend participation may all matter, but the ranking does not give a complete source-by-source breakdown for every actor.
What drove the top two positions?
Adam Sandler: $73 million
Forbes connected Sandler’s earnings to his film and entertainment work, including his relationship with Netflix. Netflix viewers streamed more than 500 million hours of Sandler movies in the first half of 2023, according to viewing data cited by Forbes. That viewing figure is context for his streaming presence, not a direct measure of his pay. Forbes reporter Matt Craig quoted Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos: “There’s no such thing as too much Sandler.”

Margot Robbie: $59 million
Forbes estimated that Robbie received roughly 12.5% of Barbie’s backend profits and expected that participation to exceed $60 million. That was Forbes’ estimate of a profit-based payment associated with the film, not a separate confirmed salary or an audited total. An unnamed agent quoted by Forbes said, “I promise, Margot Robbie will be receiving Barbie checks for the rest of her life.”
What the ranking says—and does not say—about access
A top-ten earnings list reflects a small group of performers who have reached unusually powerful positions in the industry; it is not a representative measure of opportunities or pay across acting. Forbes quoted Darnell Hunt, UCLA Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, on the limits of access: “There are a few actors of color who can command those salaries, and they’ve established a track record to command that. But the problem is, how many actors have been given the opportunity to develop that track record?”
