Kenneth Hansen was convicted of murdering Chicago-area boys Robert Peterson, John Schuessler and Anton Schuessler, but only after the case spent four decades without an identified killer. Hansen maintained his innocence until his death, leaving a legally resolved case whose evidence was largely testimonial rather than physical.

What happened to the three boys?

On October 16, 1955, Robert Peterson, 14, and brothers John Schuessler, 13, and Anton Schuessler, 11, left home to see The African Lion at a downtown movie. They never returned.

Their bodies were found two days later in Robinson Woods, a forest preserve near O’Hare. The boys were naked, bound and gagged with adhesive tape. Each had been strangled. Peterson had also been slashed across the head 14 times, making the crime one of the Chicago area’s most brutal cases of the period.

Anton Schuessler Sr., who had just lost his only two children, captured the public fear when he told reporters: “When you get to the point that children can’t go to the movies in the afternoon and get home safely, something is wrong with the country.”

Why did the investigation go cold?

The crime scene produced little physical evidence, and investigators had few witnesses who could account for the boys’ final hours. Detective James A. Jack worked the case from its first night and continued pursuing leads intermittently until his retirement, but no prosecution followed for decades.

The absence of a known suspect meant that the original investigation could not be resolved through forensic identification. The case became one of Chicago’s enduring cold cases while Jack continued to believe that information about the killings had never fully surfaced.

How was the case revived after 40 years?

The breakthrough came in 1994, during the investigation into the 1977 disappearance of candy heiress Helen Brach. Investigators began focusing on Kenneth Hansen, a horse trainer and stable hand.

The prosecution alleged that Hansen picked up the boys while they were hitchhiking, took them to Idle Hour Stables, attempted to obtain sexual acts, and killed them when they refused. That account was not built primarily on newly recovered physical evidence. Instead, people testified that Hansen had described the murders to them.

Cook County State’s Attorney Jack O’Malley summarized the evidentiary problem this way: “After 40 years go by, you don’t solve a case by physical evidence.”

Who was Kenneth Hansen, and what happened at trial?

Hansen was convicted in 1995. An appellate ruling led to a new trial, and he was convicted again in 2002. The court imposed a sentence of 200 to 300 years.

Hansen died in prison in 2007 while continuing to proclaim his innocence. The two convictions establish the legal outcome, but his denial is an important part of the case’s history: the prosecution’s account depended substantially on witness testimony about statements Hansen allegedly made rather than on a conclusive forensic link described in the surviving public accounts.

The case timeline

Date Development What it changed
October 16, 1955 Peterson and the Schuessler brothers left for a downtown showing of The African Lion. The boys disappeared during an ordinary afternoon outing.
October 18, 1955 Their bodies were found in Robinson Woods near O’Hare. Investigators documented the bindings, gagging, strangulations and Peterson’s head wounds.
1994 The investigation revived during the Helen Brach disappearance inquiry. Attention turned to horse trainer and stable hand Kenneth Hansen.
1995 Hansen was convicted. The cold case produced its first trial verdict.
2002 After an appellate ruling and a new trial, Hansen was convicted again. The second conviction left the case legally resolved despite Hansen’s continued denial.
2007 Hansen died in prison. He maintained his innocence until his death.

Were the murders connected to the Helen Brach case?

They were connected as an investigative matter, not because the boys’ murders were shown to be part of Brach’s disappearance. The Brach investigation brought Hansen back to investigators’ attention in 1994, and information obtained while examining his activities redirected attention to the 1955 killings.

That distinction matters. Hansen was investigated in the Brach case, but the Peterson–Schuessler prosecution concerned the three boys and the alleged events at Idle Hour Stables. The available case account does not establish that Brach’s disappearance and the boys’ murders were one crime.

Why did other possible victims not come forward?

Jack later said that other children Hansen had abused did not report what happened. He attributed the silence to embarrassment, guilt and fear. In a case already short on physical evidence, the absence of those witnesses delayed investigators’ ability to test Hansen’s alleged statements and behavior against independent accounts.

The point also explains why the case took so long to develop: information that might have identified a suspect existed, according to Jack, but remained inaccessible while the witnesses were children and the stigma surrounding abuse was severe.

A firsthand account of the investigation

Three Boys Missing: The Tragedy that Exposed the Pedophilia Underworld is James A. Jack’s firsthand account of the case. HPH Publishing issued the 2006 true-crime book at 406 pages; its ISBNs are 0977628140 and 9780977628148. Jack was the detective who worked the investigation from its beginning, so the book offers his perspective on the delayed search for a suspect, the later Hansen prosecution and the broader abuse allegations he said surrounded the case.

What the case ultimately established

The Peterson–Schuessler murders remain a stark example of how a cold case can reach court without a decisive forensic discovery. Three children disappeared during a movie outing, were found murdered in a forest preserve, and were eventually linked by prosecutors to Hansen through witness accounts decades later. His convictions ended the prosecution, but his continued denials and the reliance on testimony rather than a definitive physical match keep the case historically contested even after its legal conclusion.
