The Dumas family’s wealth is closely tied to Hermès, the French luxury house that its family has guided for generations. Founded in 1837, Hermès describes itself as an independent, family-owned business with six generations of continuity. Today, the company combines a broad portfolio of luxury métiers with a family-supported shareholding structure. A 2025 estimate put the wider Hermès family’s fortune at €163.4 billion—but that figure is a stock-market-based ranking estimate, not a verified statement of any one family member’s personal wealth.
From a craft house to a family enterprise
Hermès dates its beginnings to 1837, when it started as an artisanal business in France. The company’s own account presents its history as a six-generation family enterprise, shaped by the preservation and transmission of craft knowledge. That continuity is central to the story, but it does not mean that one branch or individual has owned the company alone.
Over time, Hermès developed beyond its origins into a house spanning sixteen métiers. The range includes leather goods and equestrian products, silk, apparel, watches, fragrance, beauty, home goods and tableware. The company describes these activities as part of an integrated creative and artisanal business.
The available corporate history supports a broad account of a founder-era craft business growing into an international luxury company while retaining family influence. It does not, by itself, establish a detailed succession story for every generation or justify assigning particular growth milestones to individual ancestors.

Axel Dumas and the modern company
Axel Dumas is the clearest link between Hermès’ founding lineage and its present-day leadership. Hermès identifies him as a sixth-generation family member and a direct descendant of Émile-Maurice Hermès. The company says he has led its international and multi-local development since 2013.
Hermès’ 2025 registration document records that Dumas joined the group in 2003 and held sales and métier leadership roles. He became Managing Director of Operations in 2011, then was appointed Executive Chairman effective 5 June 2013. That progression places him within the company’s operations before he assumed its top leadership role.

How Hermès’ business supports its value
Hermès’ scale rests on a combination of multiple product métiers, an international business and a production system in which the company says it retains substantial control. Its production information reports 63 production and training sites across France and 16 overseas production sites. The same company-reported figures describe where its manufacturing takes place:

What the reported family fortune means
Le Monde’s coverage of the 2025 Challenges ranking reported an estimated Hermès family fortune of €163.4 billion and a family shareholding of 66.7%. The ranking estimate was based on stock-market values. Both figures are dated estimates reported in 2025; they should not be read as a current, independently verified net-worth statement or as the personal wealth of the Dumas branch alone.
The distinction between a company’s sales and a family-wealth estimate matters. Le Monde reported that Hermès generated €15.2 billion in revenue in 2024. That is company revenue—not family income, profit or personal wealth. The 2025 fortune estimate is a separate calculation tied to the value of family-held shares.

The same ranking coverage put Bernard Arnault and his family at an estimated €116.7 billion, also based on stock-market values. That offers a comparison within the same ranking and method, but it does not make either figure a measure of liquid assets or annual earnings.

A pivotal ownership episode began in 2010, when LVMH built a stake in Hermès. Le Monde recounts that the family organized a response and that Bertrand Puech created the holding company H51 to secure the share capital. The episode illustrates why preserving long-term family ownership became a strategic priority.

In November 2014, LVMH announced that it had sold almost all its Hermès shares after the companies reached an agreement, according to Le Monde. That resolution belongs to the corporate history of LVMH’s stake-building; it is separate from later claims by Nicolas Puech concerning his own shares.
The separate Nicolas Puech share dispute
In a 2025 investigation, Le Monde reported that Nicolas Puech claimed his 5.7% stake had gone missing and accused his former wealth manager. The manager denied the accusation. Le Monde also reported that a Geneva court rejected Puech’s fraud accusation in July 2024, finding that he had voluntarily entrusted management of his fortune for years and that there was no evidence he had been duped. These are reported claims and a reported court decision—not evidence that theft occurred.
Why the Dumas family’s wealth is tied to Hermès
The broad explanation is the combination of a long-running family enterprise, a substantial family shareholding and a company that has expanded from its artisanal roots into a diversified luxury business. Hermès’ own account emphasizes six generations of continuity, sixteen métiers and a production model with significant in-house and French manufacturing. Those facts explain the context for the family’s prominence; the ranking figure remains an estimate of the wider family’s fortune, not a simple measure of the Dumas family’s cash or income.
